Does all MD/PHD programs give stipends to there students for example, Medical college of Georgia, Morehouse Medical, Emory Medical, and Mercer Medical(Medical Schools in Georgia)?

I just found out that Morehouse Medical School does 🙂

No. There are 2 types of MD/PhD programs:

1. MSTPs (Medical Scientist Training Programs): These are the programs that receive federal funding from the NIGMS, which is part of the NIH. You'll get a stipend at all of these schools during your entire MD/PhD training.

2. Regular/Institutional MD/PhDs: These programs vary greatly. Some will give you a stipend during your med school years. Some will not. Exepct the same variation when wondering if you're going to have to pay the regular ~20-50k med school fees as well. However, all of them will generally give you funding during your graduate school years...although you might be expected to go out and get it yourself like regular grad students have to.

so this means you get $20,000.00 in your pocket every year..because I will be living with my mother and will be saving up to buy a house...is this possible.

Also if you do a MD/Phd program like this do you have to pay taxes?
Yes, but it's not counted as traditional "income". I think you report it on the 1098T.

Yea...SUNY Upstate is one of the non-MSTP-but-still-well-funded programs. Like it says, you'll get all your tuition/fees waived, and get 20k in your pocket for each of the 7 years.

Does anyone know of any other programs like the SUNY upstate program?

Here's the list of MSTP programs. Not sure about a compiled list of non-MSTP MD/PhD programs tho.

some of the fully funded non-MSTPs I interviewed at are Dartmouth, University of Kansas, University of Illinois and University of Nebraska Medical Center...however if you can go MSTP it is highly preferable as most of the non-MSTPs have nasty agreements where if you drop one of the degrees you owe an insane amount of money...be careful.
