MD/PhD Stipend Comparison

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I AM a grad student, but I'm still on call in the classic sense.

I work for transplant surgeons, and when organs become available you have to make yourself available as well.

Unfortunately, most organ donors don't die 9-5 Monday-Friday.

So do you transport the organs? I'm confused 😕 - how do you get this gig??

Haha.. no, they don't let me cut on people (yet!) silly... although I do scrub in when we Tx monkeys, or pigs, or whatever else we might be working on that day.

Here's an example. Say a pancreas becomes available.... I would be on call to come isolate the beta-islets from the organ. Same goes for hepatocytes, bone marrow, etc.

Once you process 60+ organs, you become certified in use of the clinics GMP (Good Medical Practice) clean rooms. Essentially I am doing it for our own ulterior motives (we need to use the GMP labs to isolate MSC.. we are trying to go to clinical trials in the next 12 months), but it also gives me funding support which is a double bonus.

so the university of chicago mstp website says:
MSTP trainees receive up to six years of full tuition support and a stipend to cover living expenses throughout their MD and PhD training. Additional years of graduate training are supported through research funds available to trainee advisors or from other sources.
does anybody know if that's particularly different from other schools (neither of the other schools i'm considering, penn and ucsf, say anything like that, they just say MSTP stipend is X)?

I think Chicago just sounds iffy...

In reality I think what happens is that the MSTP grant covers you for X years and during your PhD years you're covered by an outside fellowship or your PI...

I think this is a normal scenario for MD/PhD programs

Hey all...

Since I'm considering my housing and car options for next year, I'm starting to try and budget things. Although I'm assuming this is variable by location, can anyone give me an estimate of what percentage of the stipend goes to taxes? Thanks.

How are you guys taking 50Kish... Is that with additional funding or what, exactly?

How much do you get "included" and taken back right away for health insurance? South Carolina technically gives you 22k/year, but you lose $500 at the beginning of each semester to health insurance.

I think most schools will support you during your rotation time, then require your PI to start paying you when you commit to that lab.

It looks to me like we're normalizing prices around the standard of living in New York.

A lot of you may be New Yorkers, and for you this data is relevant. However, for most of us it's something akin to normalizing human clothing sizes around mice. Nothing is made clearer by these statistics.

I'm from Chicago, and I go to school in New York. Even compared to another major urban center, prices in NYC are higher than Snoop Dogg in late April

I suggest we each try the following: [(cost of living in home town) / (cost of living at MSTP site)] x Stipend

This will put everything into terms that each of us understand better. It personalizes the question. Excel may be of use for this badboy.

Anyone know the stipend for MD/PhD at OHSU? Thank a lot!

I suspect these numbers are no longer current.

The stipend at my school is now 1,500 more than stated in this list.

Yes I suspect these are mostly out of date. I know that at the University of Iowa, we are currently at least $25,000. Admittedly I forget the exact amount.
