The stipend size, and thus the quality of life attainable for 7-8 years is kind of a big deal. Please list all your discovered stipends for 2008-2009 below! (for those of you making decisions based on this, take into account that certain places--likeManhattan--cost a lot more to live in than others).

Duke: $26,000 (not bad considering NC living costs!)
Stanford: $28,000 I think

Duke: $26,000 (not bad considering NC living costs!)
Mt. Sinai: $28,000

Case Western: $23,500
Duke: $26,000 (not bad considering NC living costs!)
Mt. Sinai: $28,000
Northwestern: $26,000
Stanford: $28,000 I think
Wash U: $27,000 (amazing given St. Louis cost of living)

Please correct if I am wrong...

I find this silly considering the cost of living per location matters much more than the whole spread of a couple thousand dollars you're going to find on this thread. For example if you took two programs in the same city that are separated by a few thousand a year (Penn and Jeff for example), does that really make a big difference for your "quality of living"?

That being said, places that cost more are often more desirable to live. Sure NYC is expensive for example, but it has a lot to offer. So we can all plug OMG THIS SO GREAT FOR THIS LOCATION, but I'd rather live in a shoebox in some places (NYC, SF) than a mansion in others (St. Louis, Durham). Housing is expensive in some places for a reason... Everyone wants to live there. Anyhow I'll add the little slice that I know...

Friendly warning to applicants:
Don't base your decision on stipends. It's OK to consider cost of living, but stipends change on a yearly basis. As I recall, when I applied (8.5 years ago!😱) My current institution had the highest stipend of all the programs I was considering. Now it's one of the lowest of all MSTPs:scared:.

Be Warned!

 I can't imagine you'll share what program that is Dr. Willner 😛

That is a point well taken. In 7 years we've gone from $21,500 to $28,000. Cost of living has probably more than adjusted itself though. It used to be everyone was scared of Philadelphia and we couldn't convince applicants to come here cause everyone thought they'd get shot. Now Philly is like the hip trendy place to be. Rents went through the roof as a result.

Hey Neuronix - I was talking with people who interviewed at Penn in January and they said the 28k number but I could've sworn when I was there in December the figure was more like 24.5k - was this because of how well Penn did in their grant renewal or was I just confused in December?

I'm getting more than 24.5k NOW and I'm sure it's not going down  It's 26.5k this year, which is probably the number you heard. I can't find anywhere where it says it's going up to 28k for sure, but it has never to my knowledge gone down. The rumor is it's going up to 28k so I hope I'm not wrong. Even if it only goes up to 27k, it would be a pretty silly thing to base a program attendance decision on, so I don't feel too bad reporting a rumor. Especially when that is the same rumor the admissions office is telling applicants.

haha thanks - yeah I'm not going to base anything off of stipend (although when harvard said 21.5k for the pre-clinical years I had to stifle a gasp)

Well, I'm outta here in 3 months so I don't think there's any harm in saying at this point- I'm at BCM.
When I started in 2000, our stipend was $20,000, by far more than any other program I was considering, and in Houston to boot (read: cheap as dirt). I remember at the time I was comparing it to UCLA ($14,500!!!!), NWern (17K), Penn and WashU.. although I can't remember those other figures.
This year our stipend is at $23,000, so in 8 years we've gone up a whopping $3000, while other MSTPs are hovering around 28K. Not to mention we still have to pay fees during the medical school years... but that's another issue.

We are due to increase next year substantially.. I think to $28K.

Case Western: $23,500
Duke: $26,000 (not bad considering NC living costs!)
Mt. Sinai: $28,000
Northwestern: $26,000
MUSC: Around $22,000
SLU: $25,500 (not WashU, but amazing considering St. Louis)
Stanford: $28,000 I think
VCU: $23,100
Wash U: $27,000 (amazing given St. Louis cost of living)
UMiami: Between $21,000 and $22,000 (in Miami?!?!)
UPenn: $28,000 (for the 2008-2009 academic year)

I should know others, but VCU/Miami/MUSC are my top choices, and St. Louis stands out in my mind because that city is so ridiculously cheap and they pay so ridiculously well.

To put it in perspective, 24K in Dallas is equivalent to 56K in SanFran.

That's it, if we're gonna compare every single city to something else I'm going to at least put something objective behind it. The second number is adjusted into cost of living dollars. All second dollar amounts are using:

http://cgi.money.cnn.com/tools/costofliving/costofliving.html

adjusted to NYC, NY, using NYC (Manhattan) as the destination city.

gdwillner, how do you like Baylor's MST program, specially its integration, support and flexibility? I like the medical school but didn't have a very clear impression of its MST program.

Overall I thought it was excellent. Like anywhere else you will have some personality conflicts and crap that's out of your control, but the staff is supportive, the opportunities are amazing, and the research here at Baylor is top-notch. I think that last point is especially true if you're considering Human genetics, bio-engineering (at Rice), or MCB. I also hear that people really like the TMBB program, but I really don't know much about it.

The integration is OK. You are a medical student for 2 years, and then in the PhD program so you don't have any special classes. However, you get to do clinics for 6 months before starting the PhD, which I thought was key. You do have a lot of special functions/lectures/meetings/gatherings that keep it interesting, plus you occasionally get great bonuses like diamond seats to baseball games etc (provided by wealthy Texans who contribute to the program).

I'm not sure how to compare the flexibility or support to other programs... You can transfer credits from the grad school so you really don't have to do any selectives and only 2 electives when you return from the PhD... so it is fairly flexible and they will work with you to get out in a timely manner.

If you have any other questions just PM me.

Penn is 28,000? I thought I was told it was around ~26K? Thats awesome!

How do income taxes work for these stipends?

Disclaimer: I am not a tax professional.

You owe federal income tax but do not pay social security, medicare, etc. This works out to about 13% of my stipend. State and local taxes depend on the locality. In the state of PA we are exempt from state taxes. In the city of Philly we pay half the city wage tax (1.6% I think) during grad school only.

Here is a tax trick if you happen to get paid a stipend through payroll, which is treated just like any other job (you pay SS etc).

If it is like at my school, you get billed for tuition, but our "tuition wavier" pays to our account about 2 weeks later to cover this. Well, I borrow FAFSA to supplement my stipend, so I borrow FAFSA and my tuition gets paid. Then when my wavier hits I get the refunded amount as a check.

Now when it comes time to file taxes, you can claim the tuition deduction/lifetime learning credit on your tuition because you used borrowed funds to pay for it. You can declare your grants or scholarships as well, but you still make money on the tuition deduction (you can get over $2000 back for this deduction). You can also use any extra money to pay toward existing loans, then write off the interest paid for another nice bonus which you can then put back toward your loans.

I'm sure someone will call shennanigans but I assure you it is legal.

Thanks gbwillner, I might have met you already on the recruiting weekend😉 Baylor is a great school, I really liked the 6 months of clinical time and immense support from faculties, and the students seem to be happy. One interviewer, concerned that I might get lost going from the main building to children's, called me and left detailed instructions along with his cell number. I found that amazing and moving.

I did not bother with a cost of living number, but its Worcester, MA....so no really that expensive.

But according to the administration the stipend will be $28000 next year...the money sure is enticing.

Though most of these sums seem rather paltry, they go a lot farther than you think. I worked corporate law for a while after undergrad, and I made more than double what I make now, but I feel like I live a much more comfortable lifestyle now than I did then. It probably has a lot to do with the fact that I have much less free time to be out spending money than I did before MD/PhD.

Also, there are always ways to stretch your stipend if you are clever. For instance, I get paid more than most of my classmates because I am on call every other week. There are ways to cleverly appropriate funds from any fellowships you may be awarded as well.

The bottom line is though, it's all gravy really. Anything is a bonus considering you are not going hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt like the majority of your med school peers.

Do you mean on call in the classic sense? I thought you were a grad student...

I think that standard of living for St. Louis is really off...since Houston and St. Louis have two of the lowest standards of living of the MSTP programs...

Isn't that reflected in the "standardized stipend" figure the list shows (~$60K)?

Do you mean on call in the classic sense? I thought you were a grad student...

I AM a grad student, but I'm still on call in the classic sense.

I work for transplant surgeons, and when organs become available you have to make yourself available as well.

Unfortunately, most organ donors don't die 9-5 Monday-Friday.
