With my grades and MCAT I am able to consider applying for MD PhD programs, but I would like to pursue the PhD portion in the field of medical anthropology. Even at the schools that offer a PhD in medical anthropology (UCSF, Johns Hopkins, etc.) the MD PhD information doesn't take alternative pathways into consideration and seems specifically to be geared towards the education of future biomedical researchers. I am troubled that it is likely that a certain group of principle investigators within each community have 'dibs' on those slots and strongly influence admissions outside of narrow parameters. I am posting this message to see if anyone is themselves or knows someone pursuing an alternative type of MD PhD, where the PhD is outside the field of biomedical research, so that I can gain perspective to help me weigh my choices. Thanks.
