Does anybody care to speculate/educate on the fact that about or more than half of the residents in neurosurgery at MGH and UCSF are MD/PhDs? Won't these people literally be in training forever? Do these programs just love MD/PhDs?

MGH: 9/14 residents are MD/PhDs
UCSF: 6/14 residents are MD/PhDs

Don't forget that competitive specialties are still competitive. These programs may give a bonus to MD/PhDs, but the MD/PhDs I know who matched neurosurg were all AOA with high Step I scores to back up their MD/PhD. Also, competitive places are still competitive for a reason. They are competitive because they are big name academics and MD/PhDs tend to come from and want to go to big name academics. So there's a selection process here both ways and one shouldn't assume that MD/PhD is some ticket into a big name spot.

As for training forever, we're training forever anyway it seems. My residency is only 2 years shorter than neurosurg. What's another 2 years after all this?
