Md shadowing?

HI!

So after calling what seemed like an endless amounts of doctors, I finally was able to have somebody say they will allow me to shadow them.

However, they are an M.D. They are a family care practice.

I wish to apply broadly to D.O schools. Will only having shadowed a M.D look down on my application?

That's an iffy one. That might restrict some places that REQUIRE a DO LOR. I would go shadow the MD for as long as you can while look for a DO to shadow. What you might want to consider is if they have a shadow program in your local ER. There were a bunch of DOs in my ER and that's how I got some of my DO shadowing done. Good luck!

Only if you live in Kirksville, MO, Pikesville, KY, Vallejo, CA, Henderson, NV or the northern suburbs of Chicago, where you'd be next door to an osteopathic school.

Meaning, if you live in a part of the country where DOs are scarce, don't sweat it. If it's DO-rich, then you should be able to find time to find a DO.

I live by touro-CA as well and I'm having the hardest time finding a DO to shadow. It seems like most of them work in a medical group for like Sutter and they don't allow shadowing.

I dont think that is a problem.. If you research the schools you are applying to (call them, look at faq on their site) you may find that most of the schools dont mind if it is an MD.. however SOME schools (not all) want you to shadow a DO and want ONLY a DO to give you a Letter of recommendation.. I cant tell you which schools because you must do your own research.

But anyway, to find a DO to shadow just go to the Osteopathic Medicine website << Click this Bolded ORANGE link ... then look on the right side of the page. type in your zip code (that is the only info i want you to type in) click on the miles drop down box .. set it to 50 miles or a little more.. click search and click on each DO and call their office and see if you can set up a shadowing opp.

Hey OP, I had some trouble myself finding a DO to shadow. If you're applying this cycle, you should go ahead and shadow the MD, provided that most of the schools you're applying to will accept either (Many have a DO preference but will take an MD letter). Honestly, it's probably better having an MD letter than applying super late.

Make an account and search for mentors in your area. Send them messages and you should get back at least 1 response.

Another option is to check out the link the above poster mentioned. If that doesn't work, try calling your state osteopathic organization. They may have a list of docs specifically for this, or they may give you a good person to talk to. If you're in CA, someone like this: http://www.opsc.org/

I have gone visit the campus, but how does one go about chatting up the OMM and DO faculty? I was president of Pre-SOMA and we e-mailed multiple faculty members listed on the website and they didn't reply. I then got in contact with the Pre-SOMA advisor at the time who was a 4th year at Touro-CA and even she couldn't find us a physician. The only reason I got to shadow a DO is because my friend and I called 40-50 physicians and 2 of them responded, where one didn't end up following through with allowing us to shadow.
