Quick questions on behalf of my cousin. He is ECFMG certified, and he is looking to get into DDS program. Is it even possible? If yes, how can he apply to DDS program. Would he have to sit with 1st and 2nd year DDS/MS students or would he able to start clinical's with dental students.

Anyone tried MD > DDS route, if yes any help would be appreciated.

One of my friends went from MD to DMD. He was able to do a one year program that awarded him the additional D. To get an additional D and S might take two years.

On a real note, I am not sure, but I imagine there would be some accelerated route.

Hey thanks for reply, is it possible if you could get me more details how to go about doing that.

Your mileage will vary. Some programs may give you some credit for medical school, most won't. At most you'll probably save a year since there are a significant amount of dental related didactics throughout years 1 and 2 of dental school that can't easily be skipped and aren't covered in ANY medical school curriculum.

We have a 'kid' in my class that joined us our D2 year. He has his MD. He joined as a D2 though because he did his D1 before medical school, decided dentistry wasnt for him, went to get his MD, now is back in the holy land. As a D2, he is has credit for our "SABS" class: Systemic Approach to Biological Sciences - which is all the systems of the body. He also got credit for PBL. So he has about 1/2 the credits as the rest of us low-lifes. Oddly enough, he still is taking Oral Path with us! Luckily, he is a pretty cool guy and isnt uppidty or think he is better than us. . . although he makes us call him Dr LastName instead of by his first name. (joking btw). Your friend will most likely have to start as a D1 or D2 with credit for some classes. How would an MD be expected to walk into clinics and do SRP or make a complete denture, or even do a Class 1 without having had those preclinical courses? Comprende muchacho?

I am sorry to say, but I think that is impossible. In no way would a MD +1 year DSchool prepare you to be a competent dentist. If you gave a more accurate description of where and how this was accomplished, your story might be credible.

He was obviously joking. Also, it's not odd that an MD would need to take oral path. You would be shocked how little crossover there is between dentistry and medicine on the medicine side.
