Hey everybody. I just want to know what are the differences between a MD and a DO? I've looked online and can't find anything...My interest comes from some schools offer a MD and some offer a DO...I'm completely interested since the closest medical school to me offers a DO (Midwestern AZ) and UoA (another place I'm going to be applying to) offers a MD.

Tell me you're joking. Please tell me you're not asking this.

Use the search function.

I think I just heard the entire SDN pre-med community let out a collective groan.

MD vs DO
Physicians are hired as tradesman for the job of physician or surgeon, the degree qualifies you for the job but isn’t the job itself. Having said that, there is no discrepancy in salary between and MD and a DO, however it is debatable whether DOs or MDs make more money when self employed. There are way too many variable involved, such as location, local opinions, and individual performance to assess this. Here is a sample of discussions and opinions about this question:

You've got 300 posts.....why now?

I couldn't resist opening this thread to see the sighs and face-palms. 🙂

Seeing the title of this thread made me so happy because I knew everyone would be ripping on the OP.

That, and I've always wanted to use this smiley: :beat:

I too would like to know the difference between MD and DO.

You just broke SDN rule #1. It's a surprise responses have been mild so far.

The spirit animal of an MD is an Echidna. The spirit animal of a DO is a Sun Bear.

DO's aren't really doctors, they are like dentists

I believe the order is MD, foreign MD, PA, Nurse Practitioner, Doctor of Chiropractic, and then DO. You'd be much better going to Ross or AUA

oh? you must be blind or a complete *****. guess which one i assume you to be

Very brave and stupid to ask that question. I can understand your question(I hope you're not trying to mess with us), but there isn't a great answer. I have read sites contrasting, and I have even shadowed DOs and MDs...the difference in person is subtle at best. If I shadowed a doctor, and had to guess what they were after a few hours, I wouldn't know 100%. It seems that a lot of the difference is philosophical (words of a DO), and different paths to DO vs MD.

Come on, if he wasn't able to find any information on this topic by searching, it doesn't make him a *****. It makes him almost a *****. As in halfway along the brain dead <--> ***** spectrum.

We can't start rewarding this kind of behavior!

oh hey jew unit 😉 😍 wanna date? but only if you're a md. my mommy wants me to marry a nice jewish doctor but she would never go for a do.

In my years of lurking these forums, I always look forward to these threads. My day is complete!

Although, I do hope those who were bashing DO were just being sarcastic! haha.

In your case, the difference between the two is that one is way cheaper than the other.

Why you gotta be so pro-semitic. You don't wanna date me cause I'm not Jewish? booo

Youd be a complete ***** if you went to a carribbean over a DO school. There are several posts in this thread that really exemplify how immature a lot of pre allo posters are. The best part about these comments, are that they are coming from individuals who dont hold ANY medical school acceptance MD OR DO.

There is really nothing wrong with being a DO/going to a DO school. However if you think you its going to bother you that you are a DO and not an MD please, dont take a DO spot from someone who wants it. There are plenty of people who are extremely proud of where they go to school.

DO schools arent all sliced with the same knife so to speak. There are more established schools/better schools and there are schools that are really not so much. If you go to a good program and do well YOU WILL NOT really be limited despite what many pre allos talk about. If you are hell bent on being a cardiothoracic surgeon/ENT something like that (specialties most MD students wont get into either) try to get into a US MD program (bc you are going to have more issues getting into those specialties than a carribbean grad).....or any specialty I should say.

Take away message: The only reason to go to a carribbean over a DO school is if you are that insecure that you NEED an MD after your name for whatever reason

Whoa chill. If you haven't figured it out yet, everyone here is joking and amused by the fact that an md vs. do arose on sdn once again. I'm pretty sure Mbeas wasn't really looking for an answer to that question. You're getting bent out of shape over absolutely nothing.

I am not getting bent out of shape over anything. I dont follow the posting histories of posters to know whether they tend to write inflammatory comments. Most people it was obvious they were joking....one or two not so much.

You don't have to follow one specific poster to know that was a joke. This whole thread is a joke. The MD v. DO debate has been done so much, this thread was just a face-palm from the first post. Now we're just screwing around.

MD, DO, same ****. If you can pass your second year courses of path, pharm, immuno/micro and do well on the STEPs etc you're qualified really. It really all boils down to one thing: prestige. But remember that prestige can only take you so far without putting in the work.

👍

I guess it wasn't obvious enough.
