I was hoping some of you could help me with my situation.

I was accepted to medical school this cycle and just got approved to defer my matriculation for a year. In the past few months I have had some doubts if medical school is right for me. I was an Anthropology major, Linguistics minor in my college and think I would enjoy being a professor and doing research in one of these fields full time. Do you think I can apply for graduate schools during this upcoming year and choose between medical school or graduate school next spring? Or would I have to rescind my acceptance at medical school before I can apply to graduate programs?

You can apply anywhere you like. No one will stop you from spending your money on exams and applications.

But the question arises, why did you apply to medical school without being sure of practicing medicine? You already have been accepted. This will NOT happen again if you defer and not matriculate.

You essentially have until the defer deadline to decide if you would like to be part of the medical profession or not.

This sounds like a conversation that needs to be had with yourself, your family, your professors and your trusted friends not the internet. However the above poster is right. If for whatever reason you drop the deferral then you will most likely not enter the medical profession any time in the foreseeable future.

Applying other places isn't the solution. You need to introspect. What do you really want? You have to be able to answer that question. As another poster mentioned, don't talk to us- talk to people you trust and who care about your welfare. Ask yourself the hard questions.
