mdapplicants.com continued evolution

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Looks great, clean... the page isn't centered or aligned all the way to the left... which would look okay on a regular 4:3 monitor but mine's a 22" wide screen... but I guess that's just because it's a JPEG of what it will look like right? Also, everyone knows that most med girls aren't that hot... try something like this:

Yes, those are jpegs on html pages; the actual renderer would have it center justified in the browser window.

I would say that it has more in common with twitter than facebook in the sense that it'll let you tap into an update stream. While the same linear search tools for drilling down into specific subsets of the database will still be there, the three goals are: 1) provide better tools for filtering to generate more manageable search results; 2) provide better tools for interactivity between profiles; 3) experiment with a couple different tools for visitors to "stumble across" helpful or interesting profiles relevant to their application.

I have to agree that those look more like match.com pics than actual premeds. They don't look very professional. Try to encourage users to post professional looking pics of themselves when creating a profile.

A great website run by great people is greatly great !

can't wait till end of june..lol..

thats when i'll make my mdapps account..

The whole new look looks less professional than the current iteration IMO...

But I guess ads will get them some $ to pay for bandwidth.

They're placeholder graphics. There will be no user-uploaded pictures, as the one-man band that is the site administration (me) doesn't have time to make sure people aren't posting penises. There will either be a small library of tasteful icons/avatars, or we'll do away with the pictures completely if it's not working.

Just out of curiosity, are you paying for the bandwidth yourself or is SDN helping you out?

All costs of bandwidth, hosting and design are covered independently by me. All routine maintenance is done in my free time during residency.
You should ask the SDN folks if they can help out...

I mean, they're hosting Panda's blog now, and he doesn't even have to advertise anymore.

Though I suppose MDApps takes more than a single blog.

What's up on enabling some html for users to use in their profiles or comments? Can I donate my services?

Technically it IS "part of the Student Doctoring Network..."

I agree about finding someone trustworthy on SDN to help you out. Your life isn't exactly going to get easier as you progress through residency and become an attending, so I think that sooner or later you're going to have to come to terms with having someone helping you out a bit.

Awesome work by the way! 🙂

Actually, assuming that he doesn't want the site to evolve at all, it's a pretty self-sufficient system he's got set up - for the most part. It's just a series of tables being queried. Not to say that it's not extremely valuable, because it is... it's just not that hard to maintain.

On the other hand, if he wants to add on additional features, that'll take someone with a little bit more time to invest.

You're right. I didn't think of it like that. It's just that it's so popular (and valuable!) as a site that it would be such a shame to not let it evolve (at least in my opinion).

I prefer to be an independent entity; the bandwidth costs and continued maintenance are typically minimal. Once every couple weeks I receive a request for password reset, I check the flags for bad profiles, reset all my internal monitors.

But, yes, the reason it barely evolved since 2003 is the limitations in time. I finally gave up rebuilding alone and recruited some design help - and yes, the ads are to pay for said design help. 😉

Continued revisions of mdapplicants with relaunch tabbed for the end of June:

Feedback now more easily affects the outcome; will continue to post for feedback as we go!
I think there should be an option for people to choose the rank of their undergrad even if they do not want to disclose the name. I am sure almost everyone would provide this data.

Some of the common ECs could also be quantized, such a Shadowing, Volunteering, Research, Publications, etc, with a field that allows them to enter hours/months. The main purpose for this would be to refine search criteria. You could also add checkmarks for Teach for America, AmeriCorps, Military, etc.

The sooner you start tracking these data, the sooner you will start at least building the database so that if you want to change the interface in the future, you will already have the data necessary, even if in a crude form for now. So I think the philosophy "to track everything humanly possible" would be a good motto. I am somewhat familiar with ColdFusion and from my experience adding extra fields is not supposed to be that time consuming. The design/interface is probably more time consuming in some aspects, and i think, and it would be a good idea to let data collection take precedence over design.

MDapplicants.com may experience some turbulence over the next couple weeks as software upgrades, server upgrades, and maybe even a new site show up. There will be louder announcements when D-Day finally arrives.

We're not behind schedule...I just changed the schedule. 😉

Not sure where exactly to put this, but this thread seems about right. I'm sure people have brought up these points before, but I couldn't find anything.

1) Why does making your profile anonymous hide your area of study? That seems like at least a semi-useful piece of information about an applicant, and does little to identify you.
2) If you put down the date your AMCAS was verified, it still only displays as "yes" on your profile's page. That's a helpful date to have, although it seems more like a bug than something you intended.
3) The hidden tab for dates of your progress with each school is very handy, and makes the profile look very clean. However, some of the dates could be better explained. "Primary sent" instead of "Primary", for example, although that's unnecessary if the verification display is fixed. Is "Interview" for the date you were invited to interview or the day you will interview? Either way, wouldn't it be helpful to have spots for both dates? "Interview invite" and "Interview"?

Great work though, this is a fantastic resource for future applicants.

I think a lot of what you're referencing is about to change - http://dev.mdapplicants.com/

Supposedly "10-12 more hours" until finished...hopefully next week it'll be all fired up and online. :xf:

Dang.. I dont wanna sound like a douche but... she looks like she could be really Freaking cute if she..... ran a little..

I think the new site looks beautiful!!!

.

IMO this needs to stay even if the verification thing is fixed. I added some schools a few weeks after I was verified.

can you implement a search function to search for keywords WITHIN a profile...and im not talking about using that google search. so if you wanna see the progress of a person with a specific award or a specific activity, you will be able to find all the profiles that match.

This should be fixed now.

hey, do you think you can have a NON-URM status checkbox? please, dont construe this as being racist. i just think it would help to give us a more accurate profile of students that are similar to our own stats.

I have a question... I know that in the school profiles it averages together the scores for the accepted/interviewed, etc. But sometimes I see incomplete profiles that say something like 0 MCAT, 3 MCAT, or 0.00 gpa. Are those factored into the averages, too? Because if so, that would skew the data.

It depends. A lot of med students are of normal weight and many of them go clubbing FYI. I know one resident who was from SoCal, was the beach-going type, and had breast augmentation as an intern.

I have not bothered to tweak those averages to exclude the 0MCAT etc. profiles. The new website will hopefully eliminate the need to enter hypothetical or unavailable MCAT information.

Running a query requiring MCAT >3 results in an MCAT average of 31.7 and GPA of 3.56.
