why does myelodysplastic syndrome cause ringed sideroblasts? is it due to the cells literally not making protoporphyrin fast enough?
 
I think it's that the cell does such a poor job of growing/reproducing normally (since the cells are dysplastic) that it is not able to properly process the iron and protoporphyrin.
