I own a suit and some nice clothes but what's the norm and what's necessary?I'm thinking of going out and beefing up my dress shirts and ties and maybe another suit or two before I matriculate. Any input?

As I understand it, one suit is probably fine. A lot of shirts and ties that you don't really care about would be good too since they're going to get gross eventually.

gents:
maybe 1-2 weeks worth of slacks/ khakis, ties, and dress shirts. you'll most likely have to wear slacks, shirt, and tie (+ white coat) for the days you're in the clinic/ hospital. for the days that are only lectures, i presume that casual is fine, unless your school is really picky.

ladies:
the equivalent of shirt/ tie (usually "relaxed business" / "business casual") over which you can wear the white coat.

and, of course, scrubs for the cadaver labs, OR, ER, and other more "invasive" clinical experiences

👍

Wear whatever you want to class. White coat days where you're standing around for 2-3 hours in a clinic you'll want some slacks and COMFORTABLE dress shoes. There are random days where you will want to wear something semi-formal for a meeting or something. No additional suits should be necessary as long as it works for winter formal  ... Oh, and you should be issued your hospital's scrubs during orientation.

Agreed. You will only need a suit for residency interviews and in case you attend a classmates' wedding. The normal dress will be casual for lectures. Some schools have rules against clothing with holes, flip flops, tank tops, T-shirts, sweats, and many won't allow scrubs outside of the anatomy lab/OR. So you probably will want to have jeans and nice appearing casual attire. For days you will be doing clinical stuff, or going onto the wards, the expectation is usually "professional dress". What that means at most med schools is white coat, slacks, button down shirt, tie, socks, shoes. No suits. So if you want to stock up on wardrobe, you generally will want a few pairs of slacks, a bunch of button down shirts, a handful of ties, and comfortable shoes.
