So do medical schools allot a certain amount of space for MD/PHD's or do they allow as may as they see fit?

For example if a school will accommodate 100 applicants, will they set 95 spots for MD's and 5 for MD/PHD's or do they decide as they go along? Thanks for the help.

It is usually a small and fairly set number because the PHDs are funded and space is therefore limited...

I knew space was limited I just didn't know if they came into the admission process with a set number.

I'm not sure about specific numbers of PhD's per class (probably varies among schools), but it's typically been very low. Out of 120 students there may be 1 or 2 PhD's, and few more with MPH or other masters degrees. Most schools do segment their entering classes so that every year there are a certain number of women, men, ED applicants, etc. When you think about it you're really competing for maybe 50 or so slots, not 120.

Thats what I was figuring...Once you consider the different types of applicants, it really does decrease the odds.

apparently Einstein has 15 md/phd's a year. Other schools are usually at least 5. It depends on NIH funding. Top schools who have lots of money with take more students

There's significant variability between schools, but it is generally a set range at each school, e.g. 2-3 at some schools, 10-15 at others, etc. The spectrum is 1-25 per year. WashU has the largest MD/PhD program in the country.

I'm pretty sure here its set at 8/year out of 104 students.

Yeah, we've got ~25 at WashU this year, out of a class of ~125.
