I'm currently on rotations and recently finished my medicine clerkship. I loved it! However, I kept having nightmares of family members dying during it. I've heard this is a relatively common phenomenon during medicine. However, is it a reason to avoid pursuing the specialty for residency?

I imagine exercising more regularly would have helped me. However, I don't see that being likely during residency, anyways.

...This is a thing? If you are having recurrent nightmares of people dying, I would say that's your subconscious telling you that you need to get help, OP.

Before every Anatomy exam in first year of med school, I would always have dreams of cadavers coming to life to attack me... now that I'm in OB resident, I have random dreams about being pregnant or just being at work. You tend to dream about what you're currently experiencing.

And medicine can make us face our own mortality and of those around us. We see suffering and death, you can't help but think of your loved ones. Maybe this is your subconscious is dealing with that.

Hope the nightmares go away.
