Ive always dreamed of becoming a doctor...helping people... and all the other humanitarian reasons we give when we are applying for med school. anyways....

Ive gotten into a very good med school here....the school year is 2/3rds gone........and im still thinking to myself..."WHAT AM I DOING HERE??"

All the excitement and enthusiasm i had when i started were gone by the time we took the final exams for the 2nd module(PBL system).

during my undergrad years, i was an above average student...so i guess getting less than average grades or even failing grades does not sit well with me.

upper batches always say that grades dont matter but your patient-doctor skills u develop that will count in the end.
(if i cant do well in a stupid test, how else do i proove that im worthy of that medical degree?)

i dont know if they say that to make me feel better.......but i think that since my parents pay a lot of money for my med education, i at least owe to them to do well in school.

basically...im depressed about the whole thing.....maybe i should choose another career path. what do u guys think?

hey there,
i guess the only one who can decide if you should choose a different career is you, but i'm sure a lot of med studes have felt the way you do, we all ask ourselves if it's worth it. i'm MS3 and i still ask myself that question.

All the excitement and enthusiasm i had when i started were gone by the time we took the final exams for the 2nd module(PBL system).

yeah PBL does this to you.

well as long as you're passing even if you're barely making it, i think it's ok. IMO if you can make it through med school (even if you just manage to hit the minimum passing score every time) then you deserve to be a doctor.

all the best mate, let us know how it goes.

hmm... i would suggest moving this to preallo, perhaps? they may be a little more receptive than some of the replies u might get in this room. 🙂 in any case, best of luck, babez.

Babez, don't cut it short yet . The preclinical years are also a bit tough, you're not in the hospitals yet so you don't get to see a bigger picture. All that's important right now seems to be grades and passing exams. It's depressing for everyone. But it makes it better when you look to the future, or upperclassmen and see what cool stuff they're doing, talking to them about case studies and stuff like that. You know you'll be doing that fascinating bit soon enough!

Oh, and this thread will be moved to Allo.

Welcome to med school, babez. Everyone feels this way at times, especially in the pre-clinical years. I'd be more worried if you said you loved every minute of school! 😉 We wanna see patients, not study all the time... but that's the way it goes. Like leorl said, you gotta focus on the bigger picture. That's what gets me through. All the stuff you're learning now will make you a great doc someday. Don't give up on your dream. 😀

You can do it!

Just try to slog your way through Years 1 & 2...year 3 is much better. Just about EVERYONE has thought what you're thinking at one point during the preclinical years.
