Hi everyone,

As I've gone through undergrad, I've realized that what I would most like to do as a doctor is work with Spanish-speaking populations in the United States, especially those who do not have insurance or are limited in their English proficiency. I was wondering if anyone knew of any med schools that have programs specifically focusing on this population so I can continue to apply Spanish to clinical learning throughout my med school years?

So far, all I've been able to find is UC Irvine's PRIME-LC program and Indiana University's Hispanic/Latino patients scholarly concentration. I was wondering if anyone knew of any similar programs?

Thank you!

A lot of the UCs have PRIME programs focusing on health inequity. Also Jefferson has a medical Spanish curriculum.

UM. Most of your patients will be Spanish speaking

Seconding this. There's no specific program for it here or anything, but that's just the nature of Miami.

edit: there is a student run free clinic that serves a primarily uninsured spanish-speaking population that you could get involved with

UTx RG, for one

Any school in an area with a large population of Spanish-speaking people will have Spanish speaking people seeking care in its clinical affiliates. There is census data available on language spoken at home by geographic area. As mentioned, many schools have volunteer opportunities for students who wish to work with non-English speaking populations (Spanish is common but there are other non-English populations served by such clinics in some cities).

Choose your schools by geographic area and then check the schools' websites. Follow up with questions when you interview.

Texas Tech El Paso is the only medical school in the country with a Spanish language requirement, all students take medical Spanish to better serve the primarily (83%) Hispanic El Paso population.

Einstein has a medical Spanish program and a very large percent of the patients in the Bronx are Spanish-speaking only (probably like 1/3 of the patients I see on a daily basis have limited or no English).
