I just talked to a 1st year med student, and he asked me what I am going to do after getting my bachelor. I said that I am going to apply for dental schools. And he instantly said " geeezz.. who would want to be a dentist and inflict pain on people, and plus we all know dentists can't save life.."

Man,, some med students can be cocky sometimes. 🙄 Just wanna to share this.

Operative word in this case is "some." I would becareful with this type of thread because it tends to bring in heated mud flinging.

Id rather put my hands in someones mouth and inflict pain than put my finger in someones behind and make them really uncomfortable. Besides dentist actually get to do real work with their hands opposed to a lot of doctors(exception to surgeons) who just read case studies and think about what is wrong with you, then give you medicine for your boo boo and send you on your way. only lifting a pen the whole time. boring. to each their own though.

Pffft. Tell that 1st year med student good luck getting up at 3AM when the hospital or their patient is calling them, and perhaps yelling at the top of their lungs. Being a doc sucks as you're on call all the time, as opposed to a dentist who's hardly on call, with the exception of oral surgeons.

Oh, and tell that cocky 1st year med student good luck listening to the cries and griefs of the patients relatives after he FAILS to revive his patient back to life. I'm pretty sure he will be happier when he's slapped with lawsuits! 😍

I had an ob/gyn tell me once that I was going into a dirty profession. Seriously? Like he should talk! I'd take dentistry over ob/gyn anyday!

I feel these types of threads go into a wrong direction, ending up with the numerous posts of bashing each profession often through generalization.

Obviously, the med student whom the original poster talked to was immature for saying "becoming a dentist to inflict a pain..." He has a little understanding of what dentistry is all about. That being said, I could care less about what others say about my profession because I love dentistry and I believe in the importance of oral health and how it can make as much positive impacts on people as it would in medicine.

Personally, I have a great respect for physicians. Medicine is clearly a well respected career with a good mix of intellectual challenge and patient care. However, it is not for everyone as it is a profession of many uncertainties and complexities.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing but respect for MDs, but I guess there is just something about writing perscriptions just to shut people up, fighting hmos, taking malpractice up the rear, and missing your children grow up while you do 4 years of med school and 4 years of residency that is not fulfilling to me. If they find that fulfilling then more power to them. I'll be on ski slopes with my future wife and future kids not giving a crap about what they think while they haven't slept for 24 hours and get to miss their 2 year olds birthday party to do a rectal exam. MD's have it rough, no doubt about it. So if they want to be cocky or whatever, then who cares, a lot of us would be like that too if we had to deal with the crap they do. We all have our reasons for choosing our profession, and what is most important is that our decision is fulfilling to ourself.

Also it is important we maintain a professional relationship with MDs regardless of what we all really think as we are all a part of the health care team. Our patients should be what is most important, so we all need to get along for their best interest.

My OB/GYN rotation was my least favorite in all of med school. Cooters are like cars....they only bring them in when they're broken or smell bad.....

Ouch...my teeth hurt....oh! too bad you're a MD...you can't do anything!
IN YOUR FACE!!!!

I have a bad feeling that this thread will go ugly like mine (This time it would be pre-dents vs pre-meds lol)

Once I was talking to a dentist and I told him I was pre-med and he was all "You are a waste of oxygen and should probably die with your stuckup pompous self"

Uh, PSHH whatever, yo! Hah *hair flip*

was he joking? if so, then heh... heh.... lame. if serious, then he needs to learn how to control what he says. i hate how docs have this god complex and think they're at the top of the food chain.

Is it safe for me to come in and say I am pre-med but I love dentists. Most of the ones I know are pretty cool. It's a breath of fresh air from having to hang around pre-meds all day. I like a little diversity if you know what I mean. 😀

I cant vouch for the fresh air smell, dentists smell like plaque
