Med Students Gone Wild!

Awesome. I just edited all my privacy settings on facebook.

"Many students had joined Facebook groups that could be considered sexist, racist or downright nasty, with many using vulgar language. Some of the tamer groups included "Physicians looking for trophy wives in training" and "PIMP" (Party of Important Male Physicians)."

Classic!

found new groups to join! hahaha j/k

I switched mine to completely private before I even submitted my AMCAS, I was worried they might check it out.

I think it would be a great question during an interview to ask in a very laid back conversational way if the applicant has a Facebook or Myspace. Then, if they respond that they do, ask them to show it to you right there. It would be hilarious, for the interviewer:laugh:.

This is so totally not what I expected after reading the thread's title.

I know what you mean. I was hoping that there would be pictures of medical students flashing themselves or in a wet shirt contest on a beach somewhere in cancun.

lol @ Erick W. Black, one of the researchers, said he found pictures of students grabbing their breasts and crotches, posing with a dead raccoon

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Would you visit a doctor who wore a lab coat labeled "Kevorkian Medical Clinic?" Or dressed as a pimp? Or posted online photos of themselves cross-dressing?

Yes.

I caught a clip of a news commentary on this on either Fox news or CNN (can't remember which- I was surfing during a commercial break) in which they started making fun of medical students for lacking in judgement. The newswoman said something along the lines of "Come on, guys, use your cerebellum!"

errr.....

Well it's nice to know that the people who made this the news revealed that they are the ones who have sht for brains.

I really wish that I had thought of this idea for a research study. Not only do you randomly browse facebook all day, but you also get a research grant, publications, and a news show appearance or media interview to your credit.

Its news because its "juicy." If they did a newspiece on what medical students do the majority of the time no one would care. Lets paint the future physicians negatively and see our ratings soar!

So who else just logged on facebook to look for these groups?

Ya know, isn't it silly to expect that a future physician isn't going to engage in the same frivolous/silly/perhaps juvenile behavior that most people in their early twenties do? I don't really care if my current GP dressed as a pimp for Halloween one year when he was 24. I mean, really, he does a good job, why should I care if he cross-dresses during his free time? (not to say that he does, but even if he did....)

People seem to forget that med students are people too.

seriously? med students are people! many of them young and in their 20s. some drink, some party...who friken cares. as long as you do it responsibly then let them live their lives.

This is probably a little silly... Physicians are... and get this... people. It's not a huge deal, as long as you aren't doing a line of coke or getting naked with a stripper. Medical students drink and party just the same as any other 22-25 year old.

lets not forget, not everyone is as obnoxious as a UF student. They probably had pictures of beer pong in jorts. I think that is socially acceptable down there, FYI.

I mean by the time they become attending's (in their 30's) they will most not likely be doing half of what they do now. Everyone should get time to let loose until they have to face the real world

I wonder if anyone will find the pics from last Halloween where some a couple of my classmates went dressed as MRSA and VRE.

I have a friend that, during her M1 year, went dressed as a cat with a sign that read "SCAN" around her neck. Ahh, nerds.

I just went back and looked at those pictures. I lied. One was community-acquired MRSA and one was nosocomial MRSA. Also there is a picture of them posing with Vancomycin, who looks a lot like zorro.

I think you should post the picture. I have to see this. 😀

msnbc said:
Irving Zamora, a fourth-year medical student planning to specialize in obstetrics and gynecology, said he removed some photos of himself drinking at a party after learning some companies were using the pages to help screen applicants. The Miami resident also limited access to his friends. "I'm 26 years old and I can drink responsibly," Zamora said. But he didn't want anyone to get the wrong impression that he is a heavy drinker.

Zamora avoided attention to his drinking by deleting his profile picture and discussing it with the AP.

Hahah you should meet one of the doctors I intern under...you would retract your statement right away.

The guy is living the ultimate bachelor life...he goes out to bars frequently, meets a lot of random chicks, and throws a bunch of parties that us interns are invited to. 👍

"posing with a dead raccoon"

I'm physically in tears laughing. I don't even know why, but placing a dead raccoon between 'crotch grabbing' and 'drinking heavily' in a sentence really, REALLY did me in.

No one cares except perhaps the smug authors of this "study." Don't they have better things to do with their time, and our money?

People seem to forget that med students are people too.

We're not.

They replace us with robots at orientation. The units mentioned in the newsfeed obviously have defective professionalism modulators and must be replaced before the invasion is to begin.

😳

What if you're completely clothed and the stripper is only half-naked?

:scared:

Hey if you want to have strippers and do coke, you need to run for Congress. We have quite a few physicians who are in Congress right now.

What about those who got called off the waitlist at the last minute and wound up missing orientation? Am I to suppose that those who have defective professionalism modulators were the ones who got called off the waitlist?

If your privacy setting is set for friends only should you be OK? How could they possibly see it?

Florida eh? Pfft...
