Med Students with B.O.

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm self aware. I would much rather prefer an anonymous email. I'm of Indian decent and I have terrible, terrible BO. Deoderant and Axe don't do anything.

axe smells extremely cheap, much more like a tacky air freshener that makes you choke when you breathe it--something you'd spray after dropping an eighty couric deuce--than something you'd want to smell like yourself. If that company wasn't blatantly using sex to sell their product, I'm pretty sure no one would buy it

Try shaving your pits. For serious.

This thread keeps getting better.

I had a great friend who's now an upcoming MS-2 at FIU who had awful BO in undergrad. What's worse is that he would always wear basketball jerseys or cut-off shirts which brought his odor from noticable to downright offensive.

Eh I never bought the argument that food with lots of spices translates to bad B.O. I think it's just plain old personal hygiene.
It's totally legit. If I eat a lot of onions or garlic my sweat smells like garlic for a day or so.

I've noticed my best friend smells funny in his armpits after he eats raw onions. I am roughly at armpit level to him. And he eats raw onions often. Don't ask.

I think OP already crossed the boundaries of good taste by talking behind the guys back by asking someone else to talk to him. You either do it yourself or find a way to ignore it.

Actually, I think OP is showing good taste by gathering advice on how best to bear the news and showing sensitivity in considering the benefits of a same-gender conversation.

Don't tell him, you don't know how many people may have already sat him down for this terribly awkward chat in his life. Some people have a body odor that they can't help. He may be doing everything that it is physically possible for one to do. If he has different clothes on each day and they look clean and he appears well groomed, then just let it go. He has to live with his BO curse for the rest of his life you just have to bear it for a little while.

:scared:

can you see me

don't turn around

take out your razor

No, seriously, underarm hair locks those sweaty smells in. Shave, put on a ton of deoderant, try to stay out of the heat.

Have you tried a good antibacterial soap, warm/hot water, skin exfoliation, and shaving off your pubic & underarm hair?

Yes, I'm serious...

I think...certain groups that have a lot of body hair...tend to have B.O. because the hair holds in all the funk and bacteria...in addition to the culture-specific stinky foods...

Hmm...

To the original poster, you know this guy better than any of us, and you probably know what delivery style would be best.

Personally, I'd want someone to be direct with me - no beating around the bush and trying to indirectly point out what's wrong. I'd likely blush and be embarrassed upon hearing it (whether it was through email or in person), but after that I'd consider it and try to make changes, and I'd appreciate it. Email would probably be the best way to let me "save face" (I could blush without anyone seeing, and feel that the issue was just between you and me); if you go for direct, try to do it when nobody else is around.

But that's just me - go with what ever you think would be the most effective.

And I agree with gdfernan - you're showing empathy and concern that I find touching. You must be great in a team environment.

Yep. 100%.

Kid in my class eats a lot of curry. Never smelled the guy though...I will and get back to you
