Hi ,

I started a Caribbean med school and just couldn't get adjusted to the environment. Also my father was sick at the time and during my visits home would help my mom take care of him . I couldn't concentrate from far away and ended up not doing well , and was dismissed after few terms . I actually am thinking of applying to dental school now after some time off . my mom is a dentist and I would go to her workplace during breaks, and realized i like dentistry. I'm a hands on person , love the arts and dentistry is like an art , want to live closer to home if possible to help my parents if they need, or at least in the United states.

I have been shadowing other specialists, studying for DATS. Has anyone who dropped/ gotten dismissed from med school, transferred to dental ?
Do I need to mention my foreign medical education on my resume for dental?

I know I didn't excel and had personal family issues at that time that distracted me from putting in my 100% effort, but how would dental schools view this ? Any advice would be appreciated or if anyone has gone through a similar situation . Thanks

GPA for undergrad? Idk if dental schools would request ur med school gpa. Probably will.

You will have to prove that you spent some time doing dental related things.

Any stats that you're willing to share? Also, contact the school(s) you are interested in attending, ask them how they feel about it, and steps necessary to make yourself a good candidate for admission. And be ready to be questioned about your circumstances why you were dismissed from school. Good luck!

Hey. When you fill out the aadsas, it specifically ask you if you have ever attended or applied to any health professional school other than dental school, dates attended and reason for leaving. If you land any interviews, be sure to have a very good and convincing explanation as to why you switched from med school to dental school. And good luck with your future plans.

A change of heart in wanting to go from med to dental or dental to med is not a huge obstacle to overcome/convince admissions folks. Many have done this. The failing records in the Caribbean(or anywhere) is a bigger obstacle. I'd recommend reaching out to some dental school admissions advisors on your situation. I would think they would want you to show you can handle a significant science courseload.

I agree. I think your biggest obstacle will be convincing dental admissions that you can handle dental school given your performance in med school. And you will need to disclose this information on AADSAS. You should meet with some dental admissions counselors and figure out how you can overcome this.
