Hey, sorry if this is a repost but, does the state of your medical school affect your residency match? For example, If i had attended a medical school in Ohio, would this position me in a more competitive position to be matched with the Cleveland Clinic, numbers allowing, versus, Johns Hopkins? How exactly does the match process pan out?

Considering that (clinical) recommendations are part of the process and word of mouth is pretty important, and the folks at Cleveland Clinic would be more likely to personally know your recommenders if you went to med school locally (Cleveland), there might be some benefit because of that. But if you have the stats, I don't think you would be precluded from anyplace simply by virtue of having gone to a school in Ohio.

Hi there,
Word of mouth between PDs can be a factor but not an insumountable factor. Specialists know each other from national meetings and the like. They also know the top folks in their respective specialties from these meetings and journals. That being said, if you have performed well in medical school and on boards, you can open your own doors. Even if your out of Ohio medical school chairman or PD is not very well-known, you can do an audition rotation at Cleveland Clinic and make your own contacts especially if you have the numbers in the first place.

All program directors and the top program directors are no exception to this rule, want the top graduates of medical schools in their programs. If you are a top graduate, you can determine your own fate in spite of your medical school not because of your medical school.

njbmd 🙂
