Hey guys,

Hope everyone is having a great day. I have already interviewed at two schools, and in the meantime, I have decided to work for one more part-time job, in addition to my part-time job as a math tutor at the local junior college. I have applied for a few jobs, including medical assistant job. I was wondering if this would be a bad idea since many of pre-meds tend to apply for the job? Do adcoms think that if I work here, that I am also interested in the field of medicine? I understand that working for a dental assistant position would be the best since it would further expose me to the field of dentistry, however, I already have 300 hours of shadowing experience from two dental offices. And It's very close to where I live, within one mile and this would also allow me to interact with many patients which I like. Any input would be greatly appreciated !

No. I worked as a student assistant for some doctors at a hospital in the employee health clinic, and they didn't care. They don't care as long as you do the dental stuff, I'm sure...plus it's a job, they gotta understand you need to make $$ as well...

If you worked at McD, would adcoms think you are also interested in the fast food industry?

Don't you need a medical assistant degree or something to get the job? Because I thought to be a dental assistant you would need some education. 🙂

thank you for all the reponses, I really appreciate it. I also got a phone call to work as a dental lab technician. Not yet, but they are willing to train me. What do you guys think? Working as a dental lab technician will allow me to gain more exposure to dentistry, but with less pay. Whereas, being a medical assistant gets me more money, and closer to where I live. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Unless you choose to do your own lab work in house, working as a lab tech is not "dentistry" Depending on the willingness of the lab to train, you may end up learning techniques that are useful in ds, however, the faculty may have to place you in a deprogramming class to reverse all the "bad habits" you learned, especially if you cannot refrain from expressing how you did it differently at the lab.

thank you for the informative reply. I have not really thought about that from that angle, I will take your advice to heart and try to make the best decision.

Did I read you are already applied/accepted? Save the most money you can - work the best paying job you can. Money will go quick when you're dying under the 25+ credits of dental school.

I mean it's a little different...dental school must weed out the former pre meds who think dental school is a good fall back

But i agree that a med assist job wont hurt you

Talk about how much you loved patient interaction, how you enjoy the dynamics of a small healthcare office. Say that medicine is great but you prefer procedures and working with your hands.
