Do you donate to medical charities? Which ones, and why? For once I have more money than I need, and I'm trying to decide what to do with the excess. I've donated to both Partners in Health and Medecins Sans Frontiers in the past; I've read Paul Farmer's books and love the idea of "a preferential option for the poor", and I was blown away by James Orbinski's memoirs. However, I know there are ideological differences between the two organizations, and I don't know enough to make smart choices with my money.

What or who do you support with your money? Thoughts?? Anyone organize a fundraiser before, and what was that like - I'm intimidated by the whole process.

I always refer to globalgiving.org whenever I'm looking for charities and events. Organizing fundraisers have been overly simplified presently. There are "virtual fundraisers" anyone can do at home which makes it really easy. Also, with the influx of social websites and now that you can reach to the masses much easier, fundraising has become just a matter of passion. Just refer to that website and it provides you with all the information you need.

Local charities are often overlooked. Look into your community food bank or homeless shelter. You are able to offer your money, time and physically see the change you can make.

Yes, sending money to Africa and Asia is great and it is greatly needed, but see where you can help at home too.
