I am completely appalled in the rise of suicide cases among healthcare professionals, particularly Physicians. Just this past week, NYU Medical Student and a Resident committed suicide five days apart. This is absolutely ridiculous. Doctors should not be killing themselves. I just came home from volunteering at a hospital---not as a medical student, RN, or resident where I am continuously communicating with the attending MD- and every Doctor I witnessed that was on call was absolutely miserable. One physician was walking with his head down in the hallway, looking defeated, hopeless, and on the verge of a nervous breakdown. I felt absolutely bad for him and wanted to just give him a hug, and perhaps buy him a lunch or something and ask him what is wrong. I also was talking to another doctor, asking him a question in regards to something. He acted ok, but you could tell in the tone of his voice along with his demeanor he was not ok. He wouldn't look at me straight in the face at all, and his attention span was terrible. He looked burned out, exhausted, and sad.
Now, this isn't a thread saying: being a doctor is too hard, please med schools or whatever, make it easier!
But man, after volunteering to help patients, I feel as though doctors are not represented equally in terms of receiving quality care due to the stigma surrounding mental illness, and in constant fear in how it may affect future employment.
Something has to be done, and it has to be fixed ASAP and not ignored.
Anyone else feel the same way??
