How much should one expect for a medical director stipend for a 19 bed unit within a community hospital?

I’m med director at a small hospital part of a university system, 12 beds and I get 30K.

I’ve heard of 30-40k being average. Much bigger for large facilities such as encompass

I was paid more than that as an associate director. Hopefully others will chime in, but if you're the medical director I think you're being dramatically underpaid.

Part of the stipend depends on what your responsibilities are (24/7 call, do you have hospitalists, are you primary or a consulting doc, etc.). Technically the director stipend is for just being a director, for which those things I have no bearing on. But in practice, the stipend is often used as a way to augment income for someone who is otherwise an independent contractor that is hard to lure on just the prospects of insurance/patient payments, which as we know, haven't gone up with time.

For a 19 bed unit regularly at capacity, where I am primary/attending, I would want a stipend notably north of $100k.

It really depends your employment model and whom you work for.

As an independent contractor working for one of the big companies (LifePoint, HCA, Vibra, Encompass), you can expect $100-150K depending on the size of the unit. $100K for a 20 bed unit wouldn't be unreasonable.

As an employee of a hospital managing an integrated unit rather than a stand-alone building, I have rarely seen anything above the 30-60K range.
Feel free to ask for more but don't be surprised if you end up being offered no more than 40-50K for a 19-bed unit.
Now, you might be able to get that pie sweetened a bit if you get call pay (something like $300/night is not unreasonable), in which case, it would be a wash between the employed and the self-employed models.

That's interesting to me--I would have thought any director stipend would already be included in one's salary if they were an employee. And thus I would have thought anyone getting a director stipend is an independent contractor.

So i am an employed physician and have no call. The duties are not very cumbersome, I have heard that 30-50k is average for this position. But if I am wrong I’d be happy to negotiate for a higher stipend!

I wasn't aware that employed + director stipend was a thing. I had thought it was either 1099 contractor + stipend or all-in-one medical director/employee contract. I mistakenly assumed you were an independent contractor since you had mentioned the stipend.

So I can't really comment on what's appropriate for your situation, but it sounds like lejeunesage has and you can see their comments above.

I am mighty jealous that you have no call!

I'll chime in since I've done both models. As an independent contractor, I was getting $150k for the med director stipend.
As an employed director, as someone said above, there technically isn't an additional chunk of change that I get every month, but I do get paid higher than non-medical directors.
I think it depends what your duties are in terms of how much you can get but as others have said I would say at least $100k would be reasonable. The squeeze is not worth the juice or however the phrase goes if you don't get a reasonable chunk of change for a med director.
I didn't have call either as an independent contractor although they would call me regularly for stuff. We did have hospitalists as well.
It also depends on what and how much they are asking you to do.
