Hey SDN,

Quick question i currently work as a medical interviewer for an insurance company. I build medical histories and deal with disease medication/complications etc etc. Would this count for anything for adcoms? I mean as a pre-med there is a certain limitations of the medical related jobs we can get right.

Sounds like your job doesn't really put you in contact w/ sick Pts. If anything, it sounds like you speak w/ Pts after they have been treated. You'd be better off getting a job working in the hospital w/ Pts.... Also, do you interact much w/ medical personnel (incl. MD/DOs) such that one could write you an LOR?

Thanks for the reply,

Yeah i talk to the patients over the phone. I work with dr who are in between like foreign dr waiting to write domestic licencing exams etc and dr waiting to place in their residencies. I am an UG student so im limited in the things i can do ( i already volunteer at hospitals to gain as much knowledge as i can) but for instance if someone says they take metformin i know they probably take it for DM type 2 etc so in terms of adcom that wont make a difference is what youre saying?

While your job may not have direct patient care, it does have value to a medical career. You deal in information gathering. This is germane to EVERY patient encounter because they ALL start with information gathering (something it can be difficult to learn). You also work for an insurance company - something that drives most physicians NUTS. So you have a distinct leg up knowing "the dark side" and how to work it.

I'd say your job is particularly interesting and could be definitely sold WELL to an adcom.
