I'm attending a foreign medical school but would like to volunteer at a clinic in Chicago as a medical student volunteer. They're asking for a "medical student malpractice insurance."

Could anyone guide me, where can I buy this from? My medical school doesn't offer this kind of insurance.

Thanks

PS: I searched hard on this forum but couldn't find relevant threads.

Unfortunately, if you did a search and found relevant threads you will see that no one has been able to find affordable malpractice insurance for students, at least not that has posted here.

When doing a search, also check medical liability and medical defense. Here is one thread (although its not much help): http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=155757&highlight=medical+liability

Does your medical school require you to do rotations back in the US? If so, they have to offer med mal. If they don't, but students want to do rotations abroad, they seriously need to consider it. We found it a problem in Oz, because the insurance offered to the students wasn't good in North America - they had to change it since they were marketing the programs to North Americans.

At any rate, wondering why you would be "volunteering" as a medical student; is this not an official rotation? There are lots of hospitals in Chicago, perhaps another one would offer med mal if you paid for it.

Thanks for the reply Kimberly. I'm still in second year and would like to gain some hospital experience by volunteering at a student run clinic. This is some quality experience like taking patient histories, blood-pressure, doing minor treatments, etc. Since this is a not-for-profit organization, it doesn't offer insurance. My medical school does offer malpractice insurance, but only for 3rd and 4th year clerkships. I'm not sure what to do....any advice?

Thanks

Interesting that they would require you to have med mal, when you would be essentially doing the duties of a medical assistant, who doesn't need med mal.

I'm not sure I know of a way to get med mal insurance at a reasonable cost to you. There are companies that will give you quotes, but I have heard they are generally fairly expensive. I understand wanting to get started early, but seems to me that you will get a fair bit of experience during your clinical years, so why not just relax this summer?

Thanks again. Well, I guess I'll relax then. 😴
