Lack of community service may hurt, but your financial situation might be an out.Hello I am trying to understand if I have a shot at any MD schools with my current stats.
I have a 511 mcat with a 127,125,128,131 (low CARS is concerning, will it filter me out from schools?)
I have a 3.9+ GPA as a bioengineering major and I have about 6 months( ~ 100 hours) of clinical volunteering experience (but no shadowing).
I am in a quarter system school in a 5 year program where we coop for 6 months of the year and so I have 1.5 years of work experience at 3 big pharma companies since I am in my 4th year. I officially switched into medicine near the end of my 2nd year.
My biggest concern is my lack of community service. I have about ~30 or so hours of community service but there is a reason for this. My family is very low income and so during the school year I work part time (20 hours a week), (40 hours a week during breaks) at school to support myself and to financially support my family ( I send money home). I have done this since freshman year of college. Between that and studying every other second I have in my schedule, to keep up my grades, I don't have a lot of time left which is why I haven't been able to volunteer as much as I would like to.
Would this lack of community service, my mcat score (uneven) and lack of shadowing greatly hurt my chances at MD schools?
Your clinical exposure is weak. Lack of shadowing will be lethal.
In sum, I am sympathetic to your plight, but you will simply be crowded out by stronger candidates. Take a gap year and fill in those deficits.
