For those who are or have finished medical school, have any of you seen anyone that had fun and completely enjoyed the experience of going to medical school? Did anyone look like they were having a blast going to med school?

I spoke with a married couple that went to med school together this past weekend and they both were enthusiastic about how they liked med school so much more than undergrad. They said that the topics are much more interesting and you're beginning to finally do what you've worked your whole life for in school, making it more fun to learn about. So take that as you may because I've also heard some other stories that aren't so great. I think it may depend on what school you go to and how well you and your classmates interact with one another.

(Of course I could just be talking out of my a$$...)

it's better and worse. I've had a great time but I'd never want to do it again. 🙂 the goal needs to be the reward, you wouldn't want to do it and then change your mind and go to law school.

I really like it so far, and I'm just a second year. All the upper-class students tell me that each successive year gets better (but more tiring).

Hell Yeah it's fun. I think what makes med school fun is your classmates. Since you spend a huge amount of time with them, if they are a fun bunch then you will have a lot of fun in med school. For example my class earned the reputation for bringing a keg to all the events :horns:

It also helps if you get out of class by noon 75% of the time.

Sorry, but I have to vote the other way. Med school has sucked for me and everyone has become more boring and less fun as it has progressed. You can have fun, but the shadow of school always hangs over you. You think about studying all the time--and i'm not a gunner. Just to pass, there is incredible stress. You can't trust your professors; it's terrible.

Just half way through my IM clerkship thrid year and so far....its what you make of it. I am having a blast. If you like the material and dont mind some long hours you can have a great time through medical school. The key is to not get cought up in the BS. I don't hang out with my classmates, I don't talk about medschool when I go out to have fun. It can consume your life and the personality disorder types can drive you nuts if you get sucked in. Best advice I can give was quoted by someone else on this board...remember that "medicine is what you do, its not who you are". Keep that in mind, don't sweat the small stuff, you'll have fun.

While I've found med school inteletually stimulating and interesting, I can say that it's not very socially fun. I was so surprised when I couldn't find anyone who didn't want to kick back on a friday afternoon. I'd be like "Hey, you want to go to happy hour at the pub?" and they would be like "No, I'm going to study until 6 O'Clock, and then call my girlfriend who's on the West Coast, and then do some light reading until bedtime" (Keep in mind, this is on a friday afternoon). I wasn't even talking about getting smashed or anything, just 1 or 2 beers. Also, med school is a barren wasteland when it comes to single women, it seems like every girl out there is engaged or has been in a long distance relationship for 8 years (Of course, I suppose being chunky and balding at 23 doesn't help my case). Luckily for me though, going to an engineering undergrad means you're used to drinking alone and not having any female companions, but I'd imagine others might find this more of a shock.

I am studying for boards now....step I...i wish i never came to med school but i am do far in debt to back out. I cant wait to get into one of the "laid back " residencies and hope my life will get better with some R and R post residency.

I really enjoyed medical school. The subject was interesting, I met a ton of great people, and I have always enjoyed the life of a student. While I wouldn't want to repeat medical school, if I had never gone, I would definitely go.

Whoa. Other med schools are like this? Come Friday, there are always emails sent out for parties or bar meetings or whatever.

The singleness isn't a huge problem here either. Probably 60% of the people in the class (divided roughly equally between the men and women) are in relationships.

Maybe this is just a Seattle thing.

LOL. i feel your pain bro.

i have had some of the best times of my life in med school. i have met some lifelong friends and learned some damn cool stuff.

i feel i have a good perspective, as i am currently on leave at law school. law school truly is a pain in the ass. if you think there is a lot of bs to deal with in med school, i gotta tell you, it pales in comparison to the crap that law school throws at you.

med school truly has been one of the most amazing experiences. the first two years were a blast. but it is up to you to make the experience. i worked 20 hours a week, skied 3-4 days a week during the winter, and biked 3-4 days a week the rest of the year. i have never had so much free time in my life! and i was pretty damn succesful in class and the boards.

during undergrad, i worked full-time all four years, was heavily involved in volunteer and research activities. once i got to med school, the stress was off. i could finally enjoy learning and had a great experience.

bottom line - it is your responisibility to make med school a positive experience.
