I would have thought this question would have been answered 1000+ times, but in my search I cannot find many quality answers so I'm asking it here....

How much does Medical School GPA REALLY matter in terms of getting residency interviews, matching, etc. Does M1 and M2 years grades matter at all? Or is it only clinical grades? and how much do these matter? Just looking for good quality answers from those who have been there and done that.

This question has been answered quite a few times. I remember a fairly recent thread. Search again. But to sum it up. Yes they do matter. How much? No one can say for sure. Best bet: do the best you can. Where you go they actually give a GPA? Most places are pass/fail.

*Do, and yes.

No.

Probably less than step 1. It's hard to compare grades between applicants due to disparities in grading systems, and strength of schools. We get applicants with H/HP/P/F, A/B/C/F, and P/F systems (and probably some that I haven't heard of yet). As said above, do the best you can.

Most places don't have a "GPA"-- they may rank you based on performance in clinical rotations if it's a pass fail 1st and 2nd year, or on all years if there are actually grades the first two. The highest something percent get AOA. All in all though, the 3rd year matters most, as long as you didn't flunk any courses the first two years or get bad grades (in a graded atmosphere)

Also, if you state in your personal statement that you "love" physiology and pharmacology like every other applicant, you better have decent grades in those.

Thanks for the input. I am a little confused because if the consensus seems to be that GPA does matter then how does my 3.2 or 3.5 or 4.0 compare to someone with all P's? Seems like there isn't enough quantification in the "grades" world to let it have any impact at all. I could understand the situation as stated above where they draw a red flag from someone who failed courses, but in the case of your "average" med student finishing with a 3.2 versus another student with a 3.7 compared with the student who went to a P/F system and had all P's wouldn't the relevancy go out the window and solely turn to Step scores and clinical rotation grades/evaluations?
