What medical schools should I apply to? (If at all). I have a 3.43 gpa and a 525 mcat score. I am an URM in the state of Georgia at Georgia Tech. I have average ECs, besides payed work and clinical experience in which I think I am above average. Thanks in advance!

  1. cGPA: 3.43 and sGPA: 3.4
  2. MCAT score: 525 (CARS: 132, CPBS: 131, BBLS: 131, PSBB: 131)
  3. State of residence: GA
  4. Ethnicity and/or race: African American
  5. Undergraduate institution or category: Georgia Tech
  6. Clinical experience (volunteer and non-volunteer): ED scribe for a year, COVID-19 Swabber for 6 months
  7. Research experience: 1 semester in research lab (~100 hours)
  8. Shadowing experience and specialties represented: some shadowing while scribing (ED): 50 hours, Pediatric endocrinologist: 10 hours, Podiatrist: 1 hours
  9. Non-clinical volunteering: Meals on Wheels Atlanta (Meal delivery and packing for seniors): 30 hours, Campus Kitchens (Meal packing on campus): 50 hours, tutoring elementary schoolers: 200 hours
  10. Other extracurricular activities: sorority member, various intramural sports, Student Health Ambassador, AMSA, AMSA fundraising committee, Red Cross Club, photography
  11. Relevant honors or awards: Dean's List a couple of times
  12. Anything else not listed you think might be important: I've worked the whole time throughout my college career, sometimes with multiple jobs averaging no less than 15 hours a week, to support myself.

You can leave off the 1 hour of shadowing of the podiatrist.

I suggest:

Emory
Mercer
Medical College of Georgia
Morehouse
UCLA Drew
Indiana
Miami
WUSTL
Vanderbilt
Howard
Meherry
Einstein
Hofstra
Rochester
Sinai
NYU
Columbia
Dartmouth
UVA
Tufts
Harvard
Yale
Jefferson
USF
Vermont

My apologies, it should be 10 hours. May I ask why schools like Columbia, NYU, etc. are options with a less than mediocre gpa?

I'd leave off the podiatrist shadowing unless you wind up applying to podiatry for whatever reason.

The list does include HBCU schools, which you hopefully are considering, and I presume they would make a strong play if you indeed are a fit. I also agree that some other schools will make the reach to make you interested, so do your homework. To that end: ow much networking with the National Medical Association, SNMA, or any mentoring group that helps Black premeds and med students?

The shadowing category is for you shadowing an MD or DO physician.

As mentioned, your MCAT score is very high and there are few applicants with it. Your chances are good at the other schools, including the GA and HBCU ones, so it is worth trying. Georgia Tech is also one of the toughest schools for undergrad, so your GPA may be viewed in a different context in that regard, especially if you have an upward trend.

I suggest these schools with your stats:
Medical College Georgia
Mercer
Emory
Howard
Meharry
Morehouse
Miami
Vanderbilt
Duke
Georgetown
Jefferson
UPenn
Einstein
Mount Sinai
Columbia
Cornell
Harvard
Yale
Dartmouth
Brown
Boston University
Case Western
Cincinnati
Northwestern
U Chicago
Washington University (in St. Louis)
Kaiser
UCSF
