Is it common that medical schools don't offer tours that you can go on prior to applying??

I have checked out a few of the websites and haven't seen anything about tours.

Also, how do schools feel if you want to set up an apt. to speak with an admissions officer...to talk about the school and anything else?

I was offered this at another school by someone I know on the adcom, but i dont know how its viewed everywhere.

It's not like college -- med schools give you a tour when you come to interview; generally not before. You may be able to call ahead and be allowed to sit in on a class or walk around the buildings, but there isn't going to be anything formal at most places.

well then how can you show you want to go to a particular school?

Research the school on the net, talk to people, etc. It's not like college where you go on a big trip from school to school checking them out. You usually just know them from the pictures and a few people you know there until you land on campus for your interview. And then some schools offer second looks for it's acceptees so they can come back and make sure they really like it.

and what about setting up an apt to speak with someone....kindve a pre-app interview. I heard of someone doing this for the Mt. Sinai humanities and med program...then getting in

I pretty much found that schools don't have tours for prospective applicants. I do know of 2 that do offer at least a campus tour-GWU and Penn State. I'm pretty sure they also start the tour in the med school so you get to see it. As for setting up a pre-app interview, I think most schools don't mind if you want to chat w/ the asst dean of admissions...I was able to set this up at a school & they were nice about it & I also know someone else who did this. What school(s) did you have in mind?

Edit: I doubt this will help your chances although it wouldn't hurt them. The only thing it'll do is help you understand more of what they're looking for in a qualified applicant.

Mostly USUHS because this is where I want to go.

Yeah sorry I don't know much about USUHS. I'm sure if you email the admissions office they'll let you know if you can set up an interview just to talk to someone about what they look for in an applicant..also the MSAR has some info about that. And you can do a search on their website to see if they have tours.
