Medical School - Worth it IF not 100% passionate about it ?

Dude. I'm a fourth year medical student a few rotations short of graduating and going into psychiatry. I've done a little less than half a year of psychiatry rotations in various areas of the specialty. I'm not an expert but I think I've seen more than enough patients to develop an opinion on this issue. You're entitled to your opinion, too, but you're wrong. You have zero experience in this and you don't know what you don't know.
I am with sloop on this. Seen mental illness (ex girlfriend who was undiagnosed bipolar 1) up close and personal. Medication saved her life IMHO. There are indicia of structural differences in the brain for real bipolar patients. No amount of exercise etc. is going to remedy that.

Many people have told me that this will get much worse in the future since evidence based medicine is still growing.
EBM is not really practiced to that large of an extent in the US and I would argue that is unfortunate when it comes to clinical trials etc.

Med school sucks if you aren't drinking the Kool Aid by the gallon. There other careers that can be equally as fulfilling while preserving your social life.
True enough and a lot of people are disillusioned by the time they finish their residency or before. You need to have your eyes wide open if you go into medicine and remember it is ultimately a trade in most areas. My older brother is an MD and he really enjoys it even though he is pretty busy. A feeling of higher purpose gives him a tremendous amount of satisfaction.
