Medical schools do rescind acceptances over comments on social networks

For the sake of debate, why should they bother? Why not just hand it off to the next applicant who keeps their mouth shut? If they already interviewed him and didn't see this behavior, what good would re interviewing him do once it's brought into the open? Isn't a point of interviewing to identify these negative qualities?

FYI I haven't read what this poster actually wrote and I feel bad for them.
 
I don't know... ACOM is a new school so people will understand why it wants the first class to have a good "image." I can't find the original context, but if threats were made, I can see why a school would not want someone like that in their class. You haven't even started med school, and you are already getting into altercation with another student that escalated to the point of threatening them? Red Flags.

It sucks that he was the primary promoter of that school and he seemed really enthused about going there.

I can understand....It sounds like the person in question was being glaringly racist/unprofessional/dumb, and it sounds like he was also making it well known that he was accepted and planned on matriculating to ACOM.

Let's put it this way, would you want some racist, loudmouth, irresponsible and unprofessional dude spouting off controversial, insensitive and unprofessional remarks and language over a megaphone all while wearing a big Silo004 cap, a Silo004 T-shirt and wristband while honking his horn in a flashy, bright red Silo004-mobile and shooting off Silo004 fireworks?

Quite simply, this person was representing ACOM when he made these posts, and ACOM obviously didn't want to be associated or approve of such behavior. Makes sense they would cut ties and instead settle on one of many more possible applicants.
 
I actually know of someone who would have gotten a scholarship offer to a certain medical school but didn't because he posted that he was for sure going somewhere else and his e-mail on SDN was the same as what was on his application. Don't ask me how I know this inside information.

I just checked with my mom and she doesn't know about it either. Sorry I don't troll the pre-osteo forums in my spare time, and besides the thread linked to appears to have the story removed.

Anyway, I don't understand how someone could be so bold (or stupid) as to post something nasty under an SDN name similar to their own. A few users know my real identity, and I am constantly aware of this when I post here. Got to have respect for the profession, even if we are still just aspiring doctors.

Too many people think/assume that something on the Internet can't/shouldn't/won't affect them in real life, and therefore act like douches online. Some, apparently, do so even without taking any effort to hide their identities. This whole fiasco is simply a case in point of why they are wrong. Whether you make attempts to remain anonymous or not, you shouldn't post anything online that you wouldn't personally stand behind in public. If you choose to do so, don't cry foul if it comes back to bite you; choices have consequences and there is no hard line separating what you do online from real life, or vice versa.

How would they know his email on SDN? you mean like he made it public, or someone from SDN had access to his email and sent it to the school?
 
I'm really sorry OP has such a predictament, but I just want to say that I hope folks don't refrain from posting their stats and schools where they applied. I'm not applying until next cycle, but I've really appreciated reading everyone's MD profile.

Isn't it common sense not to make yourself identifiable on the internet? Outside of facebook I almost always make sure to never post 'revealing' information on any website (SDN, reddit, the misc, etc)
 
But there are actually plenty of people that do share a ton of personal and they are great resources for SDN, but they usually don't behave the way that C***S***** behaved. I still think the dude got a raw deal. Yeah he might have been a bit arrogant -- I don't remember him spouting racist stuff -- but he might be better for it. Who knows? There might be a movie deal in it.

All SDN staff members sign a Non-Disclosure agreement and your information, including IP address, is protected information. In the unlikely event that SDN should receive a subpoena, that information may be requested and provided.
