Does anyone have a suggestion for a good resource to learn medical spanish (book, tapes, etc.)? Also, would you suggest trying to master the basics of general Spanish (grammer, vocab) before studying the more medically focused aspects? I took quite a few Spanish courses in high school and undergrad and could decently read/speak the language at one point. However, it has been many, many years since i have done anything with it and i am afraid i will be starting over from the beginning. I am currently a third year, so i don't have a ton of time to devote to this, but i would really like to have a working knowledge of the language before i graduate. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Like you, I used to actually be conversant in Spanish many years ago but have lost it without regular use. I took a medical Spanish class at the local tech school. The book we used was this one. It is a good book and would be quite straight forward for someone like you who has had a number of Spanish classes in the past.

If you took that many classes, the syntax and grammar will come back. You just need to learn the vocab. I had 3 years of high school Spanish about 8 years ago, but for the most part I can get by.

I helped put together a medical spanish elective at my school...the book we're using is "Basic Medical Spanish" by Olimpia Picardo; it goes by lessons, and has CDs to help pronunciation. It may be more than you need if you have a good background, but it's a great book.

If you have a PDA- a guy in our class put together a medical spanish program that has some audio files for pronunciation, as well as a series of common yes/no questions in PDA format. He ended up getting an award from the Dept of Health and Human Services for this thing.
Go to www.med.unr.edu , then click on Info for UNSOM students, then click on Focused Medical Spanish.
Hope this helps.
