Medicare cuts..how is it affecting your hospital?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I recently had lunch with a friend who told me that they have to cut 10% of their budget. Positions are eliminated. Hiring freeze.

Large, hospital health system.

We still got our raises. Multi-million dollar hospital expansions and new builds.

Pharmacy has its hands in HCAHP scores and Core Measures.

Increasing FTE's---> starting pharmacist coverage in ER.

Not all gloom and doom here! *ducks from the tomatoes*

===========================
I think the large, tertiary care hospitals and world-renown health systems will weather whatever Obamacare throws at them.

Rural, podunk hospitals are the ones that will have problems in the future.

small hospital, but bought by a larger system last year. There is a bit more pressure to tighten the budget further. We are moving to cross-covering between facilities via remote order entry and cutting back on PRN pharmacist utilization as a significant cost saving measure, and with that no pressured to cut pay. But of course not adding FTEs either.

As a side note, spoke with few other DOPs, and the starting pay for new grads is now about $46-48/hr, used to be $50-52 couple years back. Couple of new PGY-1 started around $52, not heard any PGY-2s recently.

Building a new stat lab and buying new laboratory instruments/validating new methods like it is going out style. We have lots of openings as well. Also acquired new physician offices and building more urgent care centers around the county. Things aren't bad on my end.

Haven't noticed anything, new FTE's being created, let the good times roll?

Tertiary, world renowned

Begging for FTEs, cutting budget, hiring freeze.

Forced to do more with less

Interesting to watch them implode. Looks like the glory days of the "sky's the limit" budget is over.

They'll weather it alright but at the expense of morale and definitely on the back of their employees. Not a pretty sight, let me tell you....
