Hi
I am looking for the names of some plants that have useful medical applications, I have to do a literary review/paper on four scholarly studies, for the topic of medicinal plants. It doesn't have to be on only one plant so all suggestions are welcomed. I do need to find a published paper on the experiment so it would be nice if it was a well known plant and not a new one that wouldn't have as much work done on it.

Thank you

Off the top of my head:

Echinacea Purpurea for oncoming cold symptoms
Aloe Vera (looks like rxlea already mentioned it 🙂 )
Garlic

As mentioned by our pharmacy practice instructor during CAM lectures (complimentary alternative medicine), plant studies may be disappointing to you, because even though some are hopeful, few show really strong clear conclusive evidence.

Atropa belladonna
Digitalis purpurea

Just do a Google search and you'll find a lot of plants that are used to make drugs (or that are used as a model for syntheses).

Why the hell not? It's a medicinal plant with a lot of research behind it...
I don't know I just thought my Professor would get pissed, but it would probably be the most interesting of medicinal plants to read up on.

googled medicinal plants and wiki shows a list of over 1,000.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Medicinal_plants

I don't know which ones in the list have been studied in journal/research publications ... I guess that's your job to look up. Everything listed in this thread is on the list, which are very good starting points for you to begin with. My vote is for rxlea's suggestion of willow tree bark. Good stuff, you will find tons of publications on that research.

Cannabis sativa >>> Marinol, My hospital pharmacy receives scripts for these occasionally, I believe its used to induce an appetite for HIV/AIDS/Chemo patients, if not for other things.

OP, you double posted this thread in the prepharmacy forum. Please don't double post.

I'm going to go ahead and merge your threads now.

We did pharmacognosy at uni and had to be able to identify crude drug specimens and also from slides. Have a look at Penwalts site. I used to work in a company extracting from crude drugs. Largest volume was Liquorice root.
Many crude drugs are also spices and flavours : Capsicum, Buchu, Gentian etc.

Aristolochia...these plants contain natural products called aristolactams that have shown anti-cancer activity due to their cytotoxicity. I have researched their synthesis in my organic chemistry research lab. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions....

You're not much of a pharmacy nerd, are you?

And do your own homework. There are a metric assload of medicinal plants, you can't think of any?
well the peer reviewed article database was pretty limited, and excluded anything i could think of, so I was just seeing if there was a good plant to research.
-You got me I'm not much of a pharmacy nerd, and if your not going to answer the question, without being a smart ass, why even bother answering it at all

Thanks I would have looked into it but I changed topics, apparently no one in the class found enough/any articles from the database on this topic.
