Hey everyone
A professor of mine mentioned a MD/PhD meeting in the spring in DC for students interested in Neurology. Has anyone heard of this or know anything else about it? Thanks.

Not sure about a DC meeting, but the AAN meeting in April 2006 is in San Diego. As you may know, the AAN hosts the SIGN (student interest group in neurology). The only upcoming meeting in DC is Neuroscience, but that is in November of this year. Anyway, if you find anything out please let me know.

Maybe that is what he was talking about- it was a brief conversation. Are you going to the AAN/SIGN meeting in April? or the ANA meeting in San Diego in September?

I had thought about ANA in september, but I opted for Neuroscience in november instead (...the Dali Lama is speaking this year). I think I may try to make it to the April AAN/SIGN meeting though. Either way, I need to get some more data generated or its going to be a moot point!!

Also, I know the ANA offers travel awards to students presenting abstracts......I think the deadline for submission is August 8th (for the september meeting). I've got more details if you're interested.

Hey Cool!
Yea i know the deadline is approaching really quickly, but i've almost got the abstract polished up. I have some slides ready, but i think i'll wait to put together the poster until i find out if it was accepted. If you know anything about other students who might be going or are thinking about applying for the travel award, or if you have any other information, I would love for you to pass it along my way. you can put it on here, or you can email me at [email protected]. Thanks a bunch. and maybe I'll see you at the AAN meeting!
by the way, I'm not super familiar with all of the groups, but what is the difference between the AAN and ANA? Is one bigger or better? or more focused on basic science v. clinical? THanks a bunch🙂

You know, I really don't know if there is any real difference between the AAN and the ANA....I think the ANA may be somehow related to the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, but that might not be correct. At any rate, I like these more clinically oriented meetings better because they tend to be smaller and more along the lines of what I'm interested in (as an MD/PhD student). Then tend to have fewer basic science posters, but they alway encourage basic research submissions. Larger basic science meetings like neuroscience, however, have like a gazillion people at them and most posters usually go unnoticed. On the other hand, many of the clinicians at the other meetings have little to no interest in basic science research.

Anyway, I'll email you with the details I have concerning the travel award for the ANA meeting. If anyone else wants some info, post an email address where I can reach you and I'll get it to you. Be warned, the abstract deadline is August 8th 2005.

Yes, this is a special opportunity for MD/PhD students interested in pursuing neurology as a career. It is sponsored by the ANA, among other neurological organizations. I couldn't make it this time, but will try to attend next year. If you PM me an e-mail, I can send you more info.

AAN: American Academy of Neurology-- a much larger organization that serves a broad membership of clinical neurologists. Publishes the green journal "Neurology".

ANA: American Neurological Association--an older, more academic-oriented, smaller (i.e. more exclusive) organization. Publishes the blue journal "Annals of Neurology".

The AAN offers scholarships for summer research and travel to the AAN meeting. Check out: http://www.aan.com/students/medical/student.cfm
