Perhaps this is a very silly question not suited for this forum, in which case delete, but I want to ask anyways:

As preclinical have wrapped up and as I start rotations this week, I've started to realize a bit that I don't have community or friends (or really know anyone) in my city and nearby area outside of my own med school. And I'd like to change that. But I'm starting rotations. Any advice for a mid 20s something looking to find community and balance rotations? Some suggested resources would be helpful.

I don't know what you enjoy for fun. If you like concerts, do you have concert buddies? Do you go to listen to local bands or summer music festivals? Faith community programs?

Not sure if you have a local museum, but many get a membership and attend special events they host. Some museums even have small group outings for "young members" (under 40).

I think there are online "Meetup" communities where you can mix and mingle as a group at various local events. If you like a specific hobby, chances are there is a local group that does it. I recommend partner dancing, forming an outing group (try local restaurants), going to cooking classes, and/or scheduling a monthly potluck with peers and inviting someone new. Eventbrite often promotes local events (including free ones); find one that fits your schedule? Get off social media/doomscrolling.

Do this soon; your future residency peers want to know you can be a fun person to have around.

After some contemplation I did go ahead and splurge on a climbing gym membership. It's $80/month, which is a lot. But $80/month more in loans is a drop in the bucket in the grand scheme of things. I think I've been a little too frugal and need to lean into using that money more to enjoy things.
