I am currently doing an audition rotation and I want to meet with the residency training director. Aside from introducing myself so he knows who I am and that I am interested, are there other things that usually should be said or questions that should be asked? Also, are there certain questions I should possibly be prepared to answer? Thanks.

Home or away rotation?

You will be asked: "Soooooo... why [this field of medicine]?" and "Sooooo.... why [this program]?" Have articulate, intelligent answers for both (i.e. not 'Cause it's cool!' and 'Cause you're cool!')

After that, just ask about the program and the field in general. PDs at other institutions are great for getting a unique perspective you may not get at home. Ask about what programs they like. How you can better yourself as an applicant. What they consider important in an applicant (great for creating your PS). Failings of past applicants. Make small talk. Be nice.

err on the side of professionalism, but let your attending know that you are interested, and ask how you might be able to meet with the P.D.

Then, when meeting the P.D. here are a few pearls:

1. If this is your top program don't play hard to get. Let them know it!
2. Ask what other programs they would recommend applying to.
3. Speak with the residents about their likes/dislikes

Good luck!
