I'm an MS1 and am meeting with the chair of the rad onc department at my school because I want to talk to him about how I can get involved/shadow/do research/whatever else will help me explore rad onc. (I've been interested in the field for a while now). I was thinking I would just update my resume, bring that in with me, and talk to him about why I'm interested in rad onc and whether I can shadow or research with him. Do you guys think there is any background reading or other types of preparation I should do? Also, what would you say is proper dress code? This meeting seems to me to be in the gray area between formal dress and casual dress.

If this information is relevant, we don't have a residency program here. We're a small school with what appears to me to be a small department. Thanks in advance for the advice!

Sounds good to me. Even as a 4th year MS, the chairman will not expect you to know a lot of about radiation oncology. One thing to definitely ask for is to be published!

Go with a tie, but don't go all formal.

Oh yea updating your resume would be an excellent decision.

Good luck! Starting early will help. Look for getting credit from your school as well.
