Melanoma Fellowship
Contact: Lynn Spitler, M.D.
Director, Northern California Melanoma Center
[email protected]
Northern California Melanoma Center
The Northern California Melanoma Center is located at St. Mary’s Medical Center in San Francisco. The Center offers promising clinical trials to patients with melanoma and provides consultation to melanoma patients and their physicians. The strength of the Center rests in its Consulting Panel, composed of specialists involved in the care of melanoma patients, (oncologists, immunologists, surgical oncologists, dermatologists, radiation oncologists, and integrative medicine physicians), and our clinical research team. The Panel has met weekly for over 10 years to discuss new and follow-up patients. Our patients mostly come from Northern California, Oregon, and Nevada – but we also see patients referred from other parts of the US and also from all over the world. We participated in the clinical trials that led to the 2011 approval, of 2 new first-in-kind drugs for therapy of melanoma – ipilimumab (Yervoy) and vemurafenib (Zelboraf). We are now participating in clinical trials that may lead to further advances and approvals for melanoma therapy, including T-VEC / imlygic and keytruda.
Fellowship
We offer a part time paid position as Melanoma Fellow to become a member of the team caring for patients with melanoma, with a strong emphasis on clinical research. The Fellow takes new patient’s histories and performs a physical examination of these patients, reviews the patient’s pathology, laboratory, and scan results, and presents a summary of the resulting findings to the Northern California Melanoma Center Consulting Panel. S/he performs follow-up examinations and presentations. S/he will become sub-investigator on clinical trials conducted at the Center. The Fellow will write manuscripts reporting results of trials and will regularly attend the weekly Melanoma Clinic at the University of California Medical Center (UCSF). For physicians wanting to pursue a Residency in Dermatology or a Fellowship in Hematology/Oncology, this Fellowship will offer research experience and enhance knowledge in melanoma. It is also appropriate for an individual who wants to pursue a position in clinical research – either in an academic institution or in industry. This position will commence July 1, 2016 and will end June 30, 2017. Requirements for the position include: California medical license. Requirements for a California Medical License are: 1 year post graduate internship. Interested candidates should submit a brief cover letter and a CV to our current fellow at [email protected]
