Hi I'm a Science student at Melbourne uni and was wondering if there were any Melbourne Uni Vet students that would be able to help me.

I am in the process of doing my application for admission for 2008. I was just sort of worried if I had any chance.

I'm in an odd situation as I sort of stuffed up my first year of uni. The vet faculty said that this is ok if I can prove I am a capable student and that I have documentation.

I am unsure of how they will then determine if I am good enough to get in, seeing as they can not just look at the pre-req subjects like they would with another candidate. Last semester I averaged 80.3, but I only got a 76 in Physics (the only pre-req I was doing).

This semester I am doing both Genetics and The Evolution of Life and Physics. I am doing really well in Biology and hoping to get around a 90 for the subject, but I am only just hoping to a 76 again in Physics (I failed my last test due to being ill-prepared).

Do you know of any people studying Vet at Melbourne that might have similar situations to me, or that didn't do so well in first year?

The Vet faculty were very friendly when I spoke to them about my last semester's marks and told me that I was just below the cut-off for a CSP, does that mean that I might be in the fee-band?

I am also applying to Sydney and Murdoch (though I would really prefer to stay in Eastern Aus). So if anyone could help me from these insitutions aswell!

Also is the STAT as hard as it sounds? is it like the UMAT? I failed the UMAT so this is sort of worrying me.

Thanks, Freya. 🙂

I don't think I would be able to live in Queensland. I hate the heat.

I went up to Queensland in the mid-semester break and it was heaps hot (and that was winter!).

I would also prefer to stay closer to my family (Adelaide) and my boyfriend who is in Melbourne.

Hey,

Your marks sound pretty good, I reckon you should have a reasonable chance at Melbourne.

The STAT is just a general knowledge test, if you're a Victorian student it is quite like the GAT you take in high school.

I'm at Sydney uni because I (really) stuffed up my first year of science at Melbourne and went on to do an ag degree. With marks like yours and a good STAT result, I think you would have a good chance for Sydney too.

Don't forget Charles Sturt too if you're interested in largies.

But you do sound quite on track for Melbourne to me!

Good luck with it all!

Cheers

Heather 🙂

(PS rumour has it in the next few years there will also be a vet school in Adelaide! They are springing up everywhere!!!)

PS it was also physics that did me in for Melbourne uni!

As if vets need engineering quality physics anyway!!!!!!

I can understand having to do Physics at high school because it is all concept, but Melbourne uni Physics seems to be all about testing your maths knowledge! It is ridiculous aswell for if I didn't do Physics at high school I would be able to do the basic level Physics (which is basically just year 12 Physics) and have a better chance of getting in 🙁

I have heard about the Vet at Adelaide. It wont open for another 2 to 3 years though because it is going to be a graduate program. They are starting the Pre-Vet animal science in 2008. It is really very annoying because I went to school in Adelaide and if they started this 2 years earlier I would have done it.

I was looking at applying to Wagga Wagga. I didn't like the sound of the commitment to rural Veterinary Science, as I don't plan on working in a rural setting. I much prefer small animal, and wildlife.

I never did the GAT as I went to school in SA.

Why did you change to ag? I was thinking that if I didn't get into Vet at the end of this year I would like to do Animal Science. With the Melbourne Model thats not possible.

Thanks 🙂

its really annoying , these new vet schools are popping up faster than pimples on a teenager in puberty. it used to be only 4 universities with vet school and it seems there is gonna be like 6 or 7...

my vet degree will probably lose value as soon as i graduate now... 🙁

Yep you have exactly the issue I had! My maths was poor, and I spent the whole year wishing I hadn't done physics so I could have done the basic level physics!

I changed to ag because I already had an interest in production animals. Also, at the time, the animal science degree did not exist. I thought ag would give me more career prospects with large animals than zoology.

and you also have the same issue with when the new vet schools open! If CSU had have opened 6 years earlier I would totally have gone there!

(I would definitely have applied to Adelaide too if it were open, I think Adelaide is a great place)

hopefully not!!! It is a bit alarming though. Still lots of rural jobs and jobs overseas though I guess.

I really like the sound of Sydney Uni. I like that its a 5 year course straight out of highschool, and has no assumed knowledge except high school. It sort of means that I can make up for doing badly in some of the pre-reqs for Melbourne. If I got into Melbourne I might be at a disadvantage when they refer to things in one of the pre-reqs that I did badly in.

Melbourne of course would be much better to get into for the reason that I live just across the road from it! I think it would be so great to be able to get to uni in about 3 minutes (it takes me about 10-15 minutes now).

Definitely worth living as near as possible to uni. I used to travel about 70 minutes to Melbourne uni but in Sydney so far I have always lived on Campus and I LOVE 😍 it!!!!!!!

i kinda know wat u mean..i live next door to my faculty and i love how i can sleep till 7 55 am knowing the lecture is 8 am and still be there on time 🙂

in between lectures is nap time for me!!! 😀

I got an interview at Melbourne Uni 😀

Congrats, thats excellent news :luck:🙂

So I got into Melbourne Uni in a Commonwealth Supported Place. I am really rather shocked because I didn't think my chances were so good after the interview (it seemed like there was lots of other people there).

I find out about Sydney and Murdoch on thursday. I am going to go to Melbourne though, and have already finished my enrollment. I wonder if I get a new student ID card 😛

Congrats on getting into Melbourne!

I am also heading into the vet science program over there. I'm from the US.

Do you know where you're living for next year? I'm thinking the Brunswick area because its so much cheaper...do you know if its a good area to live in or not?

I look forward to meeting you!

Oh hey. Are you going to go to O-week?

I haven't decided yet. Its $100 dollars for things that I don't really want to do. The main attraction is the zoo and the police dog training center, but as I'm a member of the zoo I can go whenever I want.

Brunswick is a nice area to live. If I were you I would try and get something within walking distance. Try Parkville, North Melbourne, Fitzroy, Carlton.

Its also important to get somewhere with a tram line really close because we have to make our own way to the Werribee campus and that is about a 40 minute train ride out of the city. So you would have to go into the city and then out again.

I live in North Melbourne. I will be staying in my current house. It is just across Flemington Road.

Also keep in mind that internationals do not get concession fair on public transport, so tram tickets and train tickets can be very expensive.

It will cost $28 for 10 tram tickets (about a weeks worth). But you will have to pay that when we go out to Werribee anyway.

Two tram tickets automatically become a daily.

Do you have any idea of what books we need?

yeah the public transport thing really sucks I found out monthly passes are about $100. but if when you compare $160/wk rent in Brunswick to the like $210+/week in North Melbourne that I've been seeing on the apartment sites...in the end it is cheaper to go out to Brunswick.

I may forfeit the cheap rent to be close the first year and hope i can find people to room with for later years and make up the money there though.

I understand what you mean about the tram lines. I'm hoping that if I go Brunswick I will be within 10 minutes of a tram line...now whether it will get me out to werribee easily...I don't know. I was wondering if we were responsible for all that traveling ourselves.. I will have to keep that in mind as I look for a place.

As for books, the first year info document on the orientation page says something about Saunder's Veterinary Dictionary I think? Sounds like a good general book they think is worth investing in. I am planning to wait till I get there though because books are too heavy for luggage 🙂

Also, I am planning to do orientation mostly to meet people in the program. I won't know anyone going over there and I'm pretty quiet so I am gonna do all I can to meet people. Plus I think a scavenger hunt at the zoo sounds pretty cool 🙂

Wow $160 a week is heaps expensive 😱 Is that living on your own or in a share house?

Have you looked on the Melbourne uni accommodation site? http://www.services.unimelb.edu.au/housing/

I pay about $100 a week. But I remember when I was looking for a house there were a few in the North Melbourne area that were around $120 (were also much newer houses).

I want to try and get some of the text books on amazon or something before uni starts. I looked in the book room and they all seem very expensive 😳

PS I would definitely recommend O Week- always a bonus to make friends before uni starts

PPS Melbourne rent is soooooooooooo reasonable next to Sydney!!!!

Congrats again! 😀
