Alzheimers is characterized by glutamate neurotoxicity. NMDA is a glutamate receptor and is overactive, which may cause the neuronal damage, or be part of it. It is theorized that this toxicity is from prolonged Ca influx. Memantine helps to block this. Upvote 0 Downvote
