Hey guys so I've seen the whole Men's Guide #1234 threads and what not, but I was wondering what people thought about having beards or faded haircuts. I'll post an example off of Google Images below of what I mean, but I've basically had this haircut and beard style all through college and was wondering if it gives off any wrong impressions or what adcoms think about this in general. I know this isn't make or break and I'm not too worried but would it be a safer option to not have a fresh haircut and go with a shorter trimmed beard? Appreciate the help! Also in terms of suits I've heard Navy and Charcoal are the best options?

I had a beard through all of undergrad and still have it in med school now. Some people tried to tell me it was a better idea to shave for my interviews, but my thought was always that I’m more comfortable with my beard, so I’m not going to change it for interviews. As long as you keep it clean, I don’t see any problem with it. I was accepted to 3 out of the 4 interviews I attended, so I don’t think it had any sort of negative impact on me. Also, I wore either a black or charcoal suit.

I think the beard looks good but honestly that hairstyle looks a little...i don't even know the right word. Casual? That level of fade contrasted with the pretty large top looks unprofessional imo. I dunno, maybe I'm being weird but that's my take.

I think the level of fade is fine (he says to boost his ego as he got this fade 2 days ago) but I agree that contrasted with the large bump on top it gives a more “casual” feel.

Nah i think the pic you posted looks good because the top isn't too large. Though my advice would be to avoid that wave/top-of-a-soft-serve-ice-cream-cone swirl that most people do when they gel their hair at that length and that is ALMOST the case in your pic.

Believe it or not, that is me using gel to STOP my hair from doing that. I have been blessed and cursed with a Phil-and-lil-from-rugrats-cowlick.

I called the front one my “jump” until I was nine. I still embrace my cowlicks.

I think you should push your hair to the side when you gel rather than forward/longitudinally. That "front pushed up" look always reminds me of the kid from Stuart Little.

Are you pro-shave always? I think I look way too young without a beard and get the feeling that I'd be taken more seriously if I walked in looking like a 23 year old rather than a 16 year old

You want to look young, fresh, and energetic. Use your baby face to your advantage.

Serious note, yah I will probably play around with it for a few minutes to see what works. The gel I got holds almost even through my sleep...First time with product, so we just gotta play around with it I guess.

Medical school will age you. They want you to start out looking young. Lol

If you do not like how you look shaved and the amount that your self confidence is reduced is sufficient enough, then you benefit more from having the beard than from shaving.

If you don’t like how you look without a beard, don’t shave. I like how I look with a beard, so I kept mine. I don’t think that interview season is the right time to make drastic changes, like being clean shaven for the first time in years lol. You want to be confident in an interview, not think “OMG WHY DID I SHAVE!?!?!”

Youtube how to fold a suit. I have used many of these techniques and never get wrinkles. I always pack my suit last and hang it up as soon as I get to my destination.

If you have wrinkles, some hotels offer overnight pressing services. You will need to check in early to get a chance at this though. Lacking this option, you can try a couple of different things, but none are as good/safe as professionals.

You can use a hot shower and close the bathroom door to steam your suit. Be careful not to overdo it though. Or you can use an iron, I recommend putting something (pressing cloth, thicker handkerchief, undershirt, etc - something of yours you know is clean, unlike bedding at a hotel) between the iron and the suit. Definitely watch the heat, as you don't want a burn mark or that hideous sheen from too much heat. All these techniques vary by suit though, and different quality suits and materials will react differently.

On a side note, do not dry clean your suit too often. Obviously, if there is noticeable soiling, then get it cleaned. Otherwise, once a year is typically enough.

This is pretty much the response I was worried about LOL. Its funny cuz I'm actually from a very small rural area in the midwest, but I think I'm going to play it safe, trim the beard a bit and avoid a freshly cut look with a large "poof" that seems to alarm older folks haha, appreciate the help guys!

I was letting you know how they would know if it is a religious beard. I keep mind for swag (read self confidence) reasons. I do not seeing it hinder me as an applicant. If the rest of the suit is on point, a beard will not yield an R.

Hence why you can only go with your gut feeling. Shaving is the simplest and easiest route to avoid any complications. However, if you like your beard, keep the beard.

The advice I give has little to do my personal preferences.

What would you say if the arrow has left the bow and I already submitted bearded secondary pictures? Should I maintain the same look I have in those photos?

I literally had no checked bags and everything (suit included) in my backpack as a carry on. Just hang it all up the night before in the bathroom while you take a shower. Worked perfectly for me, no need to be fancy.
