OMG... that's a lot of money.For me:
$1,600 suit (Chan and Sons)
$156 shirt (Chan and Sons)
$395 shoes (John Varvatos, handmade in Italy)
$90 tie (Mountain and Sackett, handmade wool)
Won't be buying any more suits or clothes for the next two years. Gotta sit this economy out and earn a bit more before I can spend freely again.
Yeah, I feel the same way. I bought one of those German wrist watches you recommended and I really like it. The rest of your suggestions were also on the money. Thanks captainnerd! 🙂
Haha, nice how much did yours cost? I'm poor so I only got a cheapo $30 watch, but it has brown leather strap and arabic numbers, looks professional at a cheapo price, win!
Captainnerd, do you mind me asking what kind of suit you are wearing with the ticket pocket and the light pink shirt? It looks great.
Literature in translation: "Captainnerd, I'm a guy, and I'm straight, but you are too hot for me to resist. Will you marry me?"
haha just kidding, but I had to say it. I mean dang, I totally agree though, that look was just, sexy.

I bought mine for $12 at Wal-Mart. At my NYMC interview one of the other applicants complimented my watch and she was completely shocked I got it at Wal-Mart. It looks very expensive but it was so cheap! 👍
haha. Man, I almost wish I didn't spend 2 grand on a new saxophone this summer. I could of gotten a nice suit, shirt, and shoes 🙂 Spent most of savings on it.
It is a nice sax though, made by a company that specializes in saxes in Japan, unlike yamaha which makes just about everything.
Anyways, I recently interviewed at a school where I was most concerned about regarding aescethetics. Wanting to go to this school caused me to get in shape, get haircuts at a hair salon for the first time since coming to US, considered lasik (ultimately too risky), tried RGP's but too uncomfy (can't fit soft ones), and went out and got the suit tailored.
I liked the look. The suit fit me about as well as it possibly can without getting a custom made one. White shirt and green/black/blue 60degree angled strips tie.
Forgot to take a pic.
Do you know who makes a good violin for under $200? I'm in the market for a good violin. I'm new to it though so I don't need a wizbang one.
Captainnerd, do you mind me asking what kind of suit you are wearing with the ticket pocket and the light pink shirt? It looks great.
Chan. I'm almost an exclusively Chan person. The cut is very English since it is a Hong Kong company. However, they've started taking requests to make natural shoulder a la Napoli (Neapolitan shoulders). The armholes are very high and allows great movement. Lots of misconception that a small suit is very constricting, it isn't. High armhole allows you to swing arms all over the place, just in case you need to get into a fight or something.
Loving Mayo is like falling in love with a girl who promises to remain a virgin until she is 30 (because she is very career oriented). When you reach your late twenties, some of those other girls whose morals are a little, well, loose, start to look pretty attractive. When push comes to shove, sometimes you just have to get laid.
eff the what? I've been gone from this thread too long and all of a sudden, things get out of hand.

Kessler music is a great website, shop based in vegas but ships to US. I bought my yanagisawa a901 from them, very good customer service.
They also sell violin, I don't know much about them, you can call kessler, ask to speak with dave kessler, he's very honest and will find you one that's appropriate.

Haha, ya ya. I was thinking the same thing when I wrote it. Thanks though captainnerd, personally I like smaller suits which is exactly why I asked.
r3eally? really? you really think covering your eyes makes you unrecognizable? LOL
i never understood that..
new upload up. If I had applied to a med school in Kansas and gone in with this, I wonder if it might have a slight chance of working.
Without the cape, with a suit and shirt and tie covering the T-Shirt. Then at the end of the interview, show the interviewer my undershirt 🙂

Okay guys, I have a couple of options with shirt/tie and my 2nd interview is tomorrow and I wanted to see what you guys thought of these combos:
*EVEN IF YOU THINK THEY ARE ALL UGLY, PLEASE PLACE THEM IN ORDER FROM THE ONE YOU LIKE MOST TO THE ONE YOU LIKE LEAST*
Thanks in advance for your advice!
It's sort of difficult to tell, but the shirt is a very very very light blue. I also have the option of wearing a white shirt with those same ties. (2 pictures per combo)

IMO, first one, last one, gold one. the gold one doesn't really go with a grey suit & a blue shirt but thats just me.
I feel like a white shirt underneath might be better, but the rankings are the same for me.
Thanks for the quick responses! Any other opinions?

I think the gold one is the last one. The other two are so similar in style that it doesn't really matter which order.
That is to answer your specific question. But in general, keep tie stripes to a max of two colors and a max of two stripe thicknesses. I think the ties have too many colors and too many different stripe thicknesses.
If you're gonna go with three stripes, the third stripe should be symmetrically placed within one of the other stripes. It appears that the stripes on these ties are just randomly placed.
For example (and this is only an example), the following link shows a three colored stripe tie whereby the gold strip is uniformly placed in between the green and the blue, both of which are uniform in thickness. Not the most stylish tie but a good example.

Have you thought about purple polka dot?

White shirt goes well with purple.
However, your gray suit goes well with a pale pink.

Btw, I don't think people wear enough wool ties. Here's a cool one:

Knit ties are also cool but all their colors are atrocious:

Thanks, CN. I don't know about those last two, but I will take it all into consideration for my next interviews!
with a white shirt and charcoal gray suit, which one would you recommend captainnerd? I've been wearing the green/blue one because I thought the maroon one would be too generic.
I know the shirt looks a little blue in the second pic, but it's actually white

Oh, I wouldn't wear a knit tie to an interview. I was just commenting that people don't wear enough knit ties or wool ones. I am wearing a more generic gray wool tie for interviews. Not herringbone, just regular woven wool.

This is a tough one. I'd go with the maroon even though it is agreed upon that maroon is a power color. I would stick with "feminine" colors: pink, purple, lavender. Lavender is the coolest men's color.

So how'd the interview go karbosshack?

Umm...maybe it's just me, but it seems as though the interviewers don't really give a **** about what you are wearing. (some of my interviewers have been in jeans and a T-shirt and another one was in a tank top and shorts...gotta love USC). I think if you pass the 3 second glance, have taken a shower and have ironed your suit... you will be fine.
When people are asking about what tie looks the best or the best way to tie it...than this thread has gone too far. As long as the tie does not have naked girls/ cartoon characters on it then you will be fine. As long as the tie is down to your belt it does not matter what type of knot you use.

I followed the directions on this thread perfectly and I was complimented on my suit, despite the fact that it was very boring/traditional 😀Umm...maybe it's just me, but it seems as though the interviewers don't really give a **** about what you are wearing. It may not play a huge role, but people DO make judgments based off of very silly things, like what someone is wearing. And, if you haven't noticed a 1hr interview literally flies by. In other words, its not ample time to really get to know you so other factors (i.e. dress, confidence, self-presentation, etc) will play a larger role than they probably should. JM.02

It went fine, thanks! The guy I interviewed with was a radiology researcher and he was really, really casual. Very laid back interview!
I guess since not many people have been getting invites during the winter holidays (or they're happy with their acceptances), this thread hasn't been moving. But I have a question... what do you guys think about
1) wearing a 3-piece suit to an interview? or a non-matching vest + suit
and/or
2) An animal print tie that you commonly see with Ferragamo and Hermes?

Prior in the thread I believe captainnerd suggested to not do a 3piece suit, just go for the dark suit + light shirt.
Not sure what you mean about the tie, got pictures?
👍 I think this thread is funny and am waiting for the standard to escalate to: suit/vest/bowtie/wing-tip/pocket watch/topcoat/fedora/feather/cane/monocle/cape monster.
Anyways, I personally like three-piece suits, depending on the color and pattern. I tend to lean towards a light gray color with very faint, thins, and sparse stripes. If you can help it, get a faint, large windowpane pattern instead of a striped (this way you avoid the risk of too many stipes goin' on with the vest/jacket/pant). Second, I figure if you're trying to show that you have confidence and style, I'd still stick with the light grey suit, and pair it with brown shoes & belt. From what i've been reading, everyone sounds like theyr'e going to a funeral with all the black, charcoal, and dark navy blue.
Better yet, skip the suit all together. You can look perfectly professional without a suit. Remember, it is winter time, or will at least be fairly cold when you interview. Show up in nice strped or windowpane plaid slacks, nice dress shirt, with a nice light (as in weight) wool half-zip sweater layerd on top. You won't even need to wear a tie and you'll look like you really took some time into putting together your outfit without just conforming to the saftey of suit. Make sure you wear a fitted, contrasting, approx. knee-length wool top coat, and light scarf over this and I'll bet you'll be the best dressed in your bunch. Just a thought fellas. Professional doesn't always mean suit and tie.

and a earth-tone matching scarf and or gloves.

That would be a terrible idea for med school interviews, especially the not wearing a tie part. While I agree that professional does not always mean a suit and tie, you do not want to be the student standing out at your interviews because you are not wearing a suit. Without a suit, you are going to like you were unprepared and lazy.

It's been my experience that the tie is the single most important piece of apparel in an interview.
I really enjoy wearing suits and I spent a lot of time before this interview season picking out a suit--my armor, as I like to call it. I ended up spending a fortune on a tailored suit, two shirts, and two ties, and while I don't regret it one bit, I have only received compliments on one of my ties.
You should understand that the tie is really the only piece of apparel that lets a man show off his creativity. At the same time, the tie has to be professional; no animal prints, snow-flakes, cartoon characters, etc. Stripes are usually a safe bet. Solid colors are boring and patterns can be too flashy. My favorite tie has light purple, blue, and white stripes (of various shades).
Having said that, (1) wear the 3 piece suit without the vest (pant and jacket colors should match), and (2) get a new tie. You can find nice ties ($150) in Nordstrom RACK for like $40.

Something like this:

You may have a point about the tie. It may or may not be too casual depending on how you present youreself and how your overall outfit appears. Regardless, you can easily throw a tie into almost any outfit if you feel underdressed. I was actually just trying to get people out of the rut of dark suit + bright tie + white shirt.

uh no. That doesn't look very professional. Also I wouldn't recommend bright orange. Either go for a paler or a darker shade, or a different color

Agree with this. Black ties should only be reserved for funerals, while solid navy and gray are great for interviewing. A light blue shirt works well for interviewing as well and makes a change from the white. I prefer classic repp stripe ties for interviews which can allow for some color without being obnoxious.

hmm.. if no animal prints
how about this dark purple?

barf on the Kaplan method and all of that B.S. Wear a black suit if you want. it doesn't matter.
Seriously, how badly do you think intellectuals are going to judge you on how off-black your suit is? Surely they have more thinking going on than most give them credit for.
Obviously don't go in there with a mohawk, purple hair, or a wacky tie with Felix the Cat or something though. I can't help you if this comes as a shock to you.
