has anyone gotten a shirt from Indochino or Inditailored or Propercloth? My body doesn't fit normal shirts because my neck is too big so I can never button up the top comfortably.

I'm going to try www.mysuitshop.com, but I've heard mixed reviews. Their prices are amazing though, so I figure it's worth a shot and I can't imagine they would be worse fitting than off the rack, for roughly the same price.

Those shoes look fine. If you want to be really picky, I believe most people would recommend a plain captoe. Creasing in the top of the shoe is natural with wear but shoe trees help prevent as well as keep the shape of the shoe while keeping them in better condition. You can usually find a pair of trees for 15-20 dollars, so I would really recommend buying a pair.

wait so you would say a plain captoe with creases is better than this kind w/o creases: http://www.dba-oracle.com/images/pro...ress_shoes.jpg? cuz i really would rather get the better pair of shoes. tks again.

Navy blue with stripes - probably one of the most professional styles there is. seriously.

Striping on suits is almost always done poorly. Especially when sold to the widespread consumer. Suit makers figure people want to look like their favorite NBA or NFL star. I would stick with solid to start things off. And when you want to add pinstriping, never go with bright pinstriping in white that contrasts with the main color. Pinstriping in purples or light grays are always more tasteful.

I've seen worse but this is a good example of bad pinstriping:

Just thought I'd throw this in. You can find a suit now with working sleeve buttons and canvas construction for $500. I heard J Crew also has something similar for this cheap. I suspect made-in-China or Eastern Europe in order to reach those types of prices but it beats the previous generation of made-in-China stuff. That's progress. Of sorts.

I just visited the site. Looks complex. Too many options. But I guess it's the best option. Looks like a nice place.

I guess I'll stick to seeing a cutter in person and being able to touch and feel fabrics and ask questions.

Negatory. I did my due diligence and these guys are hacks. There's about a dozen identical websites and they all have terrible reviews. Inconsistent, terrible customer service, hidden charges, low quality fabric/products, etc...

Hey guys,

Just need some advice

I plan on wearing a black pinestripe suit with a blue shirt. I'm having a hard time with what tie to wear. Does it even matter? I wanted to try some blue pattern but it kind of blends in with the shirt and I don't really remember if you are supposed to match the tie and shirt color or not. Please guide me =)

Many thanks!

Yes - that's actually pretty horrible.

 I was thinking the same thing.

are cufflinks and a white french cuff shirt to flashy?

I think it could work, but it could also be a bit much. That's a judgment call though.

I'm going pretty conservative. Dark blue suit, white shirt and and a blueish tie.

My opinion is that you should be the one that stands out, not your outfit.

Your tie is the one place you can take some chances. If you really want to get a good tie, wear your suit into a dept. store and find woman that works there to match you up with a tie. It helps a lot, plus they might give you some other dress pointers.

what do you guys think of this outfit? i have a suit like this, and i know where i can find the green shirt and tie. too bold?

EDIT: or actually anything in that slideshow. i particularly like slide 4 (the yellow), but the homepage is my favorite (the green),

I think the green one is hideous, but I'm old fashioned.

lol, i love being bold with my clothes, especially with my nighttime wear and suits. so i guess if an old fashioned person thinks its hideous, an adcom will too since they're mostly all 50+ years old and probably very conventional?

Yeah, you could get lucky and get someone younger, but I'm going to wager that it wouldn't go over well.

Get all crazy with your suits once you get in. 😉

Do not match the shirt to the tie. You will look like Regis Philbin.

There is a way to be bold and still be classical. Look at how the british dress. Americans think the Brits dress too flashy. But Brits are classic. Get checks in purple and try gingham in pinks and lavenders. They are bold but still classic.

Also, yellow is an awful color for men's shirts. It is often associated with disease and sweat. Yellow is always hard to pull off.

It is unfortunate Americans don't add more color. And when they do, its obnoxious.

Buy ginghams like this:

Although I would wear something like this to an interview, it is hard to pull off.

that's not conservative business dress at all.

I was not recommending it to an interview. One person just wanted to add boldness to their interview and I told him against it. However, if I were to recommend adding any element of boldness to an interview outfit, I would start small and try to emulate the British.

In fact, I think it is a shame American's are stuck with the white and blue shirt and the black suit. It would be nice if you were allowed to wear color and still be viewed as conservative. It's a matter of taste and social norms I guess.

Is a watch okay or not? I have a DKNY watch that I'm thinking of wearing.

Many people consider it a fashion mistake to wear a metal banded watch, but a leather/fabric banded one is a necessity. If it all possible, the band should match your belt and shoes.

In my opinion, a watch is a must wear in an interview.

It's a metal banded one, the only watch I have.

so i have an interview today and got wrinkles in my suit. how to get out the wrinkles. tried ironing, doesn't seem to work...should i push to a higher setting.

Put it in the bathroom and turn on the shower to full hot. The steam should do the trick. Never iron a suit, you may melt the glue in it if it has glue (most suits these days have glue).

Are shoes that make some noise when walking ok? It's my favorite pair

Yes, they're okay. Shoes will squeak on very polished surfaces. That's normal. It is possible the shoes are poorly constructed if they squeak all around. As long as these aren't the shoes given to babies so that mothers know where their children are located, then it should be fine.

Well they are not broken, just loud shoes bc of the heel

Wait why is a watch necessary with a suit? Would it look bad if i didn't wear one? I'm sorry I can't afford a new watch 🙁

Not a big deal. It's probably more useful for you, so you can tell the time without having to bust out your phone to check what time it is.

so pin strip suits are bad? I just bought a dark navy suit with very obvious gray strips, should I return it and get a solid color suit? thanks

Ok that makes me feel better, a couple of questions

1) My suit has 3 buttons on the coat (not very traditional I know), would that look bad. I know the more "fashionable" ones are two buttons?

2) Do people take a briefcase or something to hold on too? I'm sorry, I'm new to this...

i apologize in advance if this has been asked or brought up already, but if you are wearing a 3 or 2 button jacket, which buttons do you button up while walking around? standing? sitting?

I'm brining a leather portfolio to carry around. A briefcase looks a bit too odd in this situation.

For a 3 button suit, you can either button the top two or just the middle. For a 2 button suit, only the top is buttoned. Either way, the bottom is never buttoned. While sitting, I unbutton the top 2 (since I have a 3 button) but that's just my preference.

For the love of God, man, do not take a briefcase or anything to hold onto, it projects insecurity, just walk into your interviews, give your interviewers a firm handshake, a confident look in the eye, and then blow them away with your effervescent personality. Your briefcase will not get you admitted to medical school, and might get your rejected, unless it is high quality Spanish leather.

For the sake of ease, just keep the top two buttoned. There's a rule as to when a suit can have the top button unbuttoned but it is a rule I rather not get into. Also, if you're the average American who bought the avg suit, then it is probably a suit that requires the top be buttoned. Somewhere in this monster of a thread the rule has been expressed. It involves whether or not a suit was made for the top button to be unbuttoned. Most suits are not made this way. Generally, a suit that is made to have the top button unbuttoned is NOT made in a factory. They are generally finished by hand by skilled workers.

When sitting, do whatever is most comfortable. If your suit requires you undo all buttons, do it. Had you purchased a side-vented suit, you wouldn't need to do anything. If you bought a suit with 4 or 5 buttons (which you should NOT ever do), then you will look stiff while sitting. This is why you never buy these suits.

Buy a two button suit and you never have to worry about anything. Keep the top button buttoned and the location of this button is low enough that it doesn't bunch the suit when you sit.

It can be done tastefully. Pictures are required to make a final judgement. Dark navy with gray strips can mean anything. The thickness and spacing of the gray striping can make or break a suit.

Probably not this tie since I try to stick with the "Two plain, one fancy" rule, and I'd count the suit as a "fancy"

I'm a girl, but I'll post here anyways. That suit is nice, but I think you should go with a solid color tie. It's just too much have stripes on the suit and then also stripes on your tie. Maybe even small patterns? Classy looking suit though!

is it okay to wear a gray suit with a dark blue tie to med school interviews? i heard most of people prefer black suit

Wear a suit, if male. If you like to wear a watch, do that also. If you are a douchebag, a 5000$ suit won't save you. You'd still be a douchebag.

But - you should definitely have a Windsor knot, even if your soul = douchbaggery. At least you won't look stupid.

Demanding a Windsor knot is rather douchebaggish. 4 in hand is perfectly fine as is half windsor. In fact, of all the knots, Windsor is most douchebaggish since it is the largest. Of my observations of people on subways, this knot is employed by young people, NBA stars, and guidos.

You do knot want big knots. This picture also shows why square toe is not cool:

Dude, as a male a watch is the one acceptable piece of jewelry to wear (outside of a wedding band). Not only that, a watch is a great way to demonstrate your taste. In the professional world watches are second only to cars when showing off success for men (to me they are number 1).
