Hi guys,

Any advice on a men's portfolio for interviewing? I need something professional looking that can hold numerous papers. Most portfolios seem like they can comfortably fit only one or two journal articles comfortably...

Suggestions?

Thanks!

I got that one on Amazon and think its quite attractive. Definitely big enough to hold all your articles and paper for notes, pens, etc.

Judging by my first interview, I am in the minority...but what the heck is point of the portfolio? All 6 interview rooms I went into, the interviewer had my entire application stapled in front of him. None of them wanted to see my research, but they asked about it. Seems extraneous....

I don't want it for papers for them - I want it for papers for me. A place to put handouts they give, a place to take notes on my impressions/answers to questions throughout the day, etc.

I don't need a big book bag or something and I don't want to carry around a little purse. Portfolio seems like the most professional options for: keys, papers and money.

Every program I interviewed at provided a folder with all their information in it. Try to bring as few things as possible with you because you move around a lot during the day from room to room and you might forget your expensive portfolio.

IF we opt for the Portfolio option on interview day, does the portfolio need to look super spiffy? I have a good one from many years ago, and it spent some time in a pile of books... so it looks a little worn with a book and spiral notebook inprint on it... I'll see if it corrects itself. Will I need to buy another?

As long as it's not falling apart you'll be fine because nobody will probably ever see it. You'll carry it around under the folder they gave you (with a pen that I forgot to mention before), and then you'll set it on the ground during lunch and your interviews. Definitely do not spend money on a new one because you really do not need one, they have copies of your whole file in front of them. I suppose if you're going to take detailed notes on a place you'll need some paper. To be honest though, most programs are the same logistically, I based my decision on: 1. Did I like the city/town? and 2. Did I like the people? With the new work rules, call is no longer an issue, pay sucks no matter what, and if it's academic, the big fellowships should be there.
