I have and still do use it in combination with flashcardexchange.com
I find that I dont get much out of using someone elses cards, but rather get the most when I make the cards. Using the cards just solidifies the info.
I have it on an iTouch, not a laptop. It is nice to flip through cards on the way to class, lunch, right before the exam.
I use it more to take notes than traditional 'note cards'.
You can set up a free account at flashcardexchange.com, browse card sets, and make your own. Then you can 'study' through their website. That will give you more of an idea if you will like mental case, as it just a more polished look.
One other good thing about mental case, is that if you make a card wrong, it automatically repeats the card 3-4 more times throughout your card stack. Repetition is key for retention.
