Mentioning acceptance(s) during an interview

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Here's a traditional wisdom: don't bring up acceptance in a conversation if not asked.

i agree with you 100%

i guess i was mentioning this to demonstrate (1) my sincere interest in this school and (2) as leverage

you think this is gonna be detrimental for my decision? 🙁
Afterall, it's not such a big deal. Think positive 😉

I don't see how it would hurt to mention I was acccepted to X, but I plan to come here if accepted. I would have mentioned it if it came up like it did in your case.

i dont think it would have hurt you. the interviewer should have been pleased to see you that enthusiastic to go to your school.

At least it shows that you don't need this acceptance as badly as some other aplicants. 🙂Just my $0.02

Yeah, but I would think (and hope) that med schools give acceptances to the best qualified people, not the most desperate.

I hope so, but it is not true for many state schools.

leave your options open? oh man... when I received my first acceptance letter it said "you have 10 days to decided" without knowing if othere schools had accepted me or not...

But you get to hold as many acceptances as you want until May 15th... 😕

if it is brought up, then do not lie and be humble as much as being honest. schools can easily find out by making inquiries because once accepted your name is circulated within aamc.

I didn't do that hold thing... I applied to 4 schools I wanted. First acceptance I received, gets to have me... it's their loss otherwise...lol

I wouldn't "volunteer" it. But I think it won't hurt, and might help, to tell them about other acceptances.

Shows you are "acceptable."

Shows that you like their school enough to spend time and $$ to come to interview even tho you have acceptances.

Gives you a great chance to say, if true, that you would go to their school over your other acceptances. (if not why DID you spend the $$$???)

I sent a letter of intent to my first choice school telling them that I had X number of acceptances and planned to attend Y school, but would attend their school, if accepted. Got a call a week later with an acceptance. (I am sure that it didn't hurt that the school I told them I had been accepted to was ranked quite a bit higher than they were. It showed that I REALLY loved their school, and for the right reasons.)

If you have the money...the deposits to the schools where I was accepted are $500 and $440.

MD schools are usually $100 or less to hold the spot and it is fully refundable if you later decide to go elsewhere.

The $500 for Tulane only has to be paid by May 15 when you're deciding. You can hold the spot for free.

Wait can schools we interview at actually find out or know where we have been accepted through the AAMC? I thought that schools are only notified of any/all acceptances you are holding on/after May 15 when you can only hold one?

Only bring it up if you are accepted to a rival school, i.e. if I was accepted to Michigan State I would tell the Michigan interviewer this and also I would tell him how I am a Michigan fan and hate M-State, but I want to stay in Michigan, then he would be like, put Michigan fans where they are suppose to be. 🙂
